Freelance writer & broadcaster + film exhibition and audience development person. I breathe the spectrum of film and music. Mildly cretinous.

Consistently doing unique ability fire events for genre cinema in Bristol โ now theyโre throwing a few shrimp on the barbie!
05.10.2025 14:08 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0A true Home Secretary of the United Kingdom in the 21st Century probably should have attended a protest or two in their time in opposition (or just private lives) and understand the right to protest - with little to no limit - is a vital part of a healthy society.
05.10.2025 09:12 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0The new PTA film pleasantly met expectations - possibly the most narrative driven feature heโs done and decent performances all round (even if Sean Penn went a bit comic book, at times).
Absolute classic itโs not, but the fact the 2.6hr runtime clapped along is always a good omen.
A true British treasure and one of most impactful acting exports.
Rrrrrrichard!
Pouring one out for Patricia Routledge tonight.
This is spot on from @zackpolanski.bsky.social, who is himself Jewish and comes from Manchester.
Shabana Mahmoud is being deeply dishonest, disingenuous and dangerous by conflating protests against genocide with this antisemitic attack. It is not antisemitic to protest against the horror in Gaza.
The following feature film and its component parts contain deep-fakes. and fabulation, deceptiveness and duplicity, appropriation and recontextualization, transformation, manipulation, and conversion. The resulting work is utterly subjective, individually crafted, and completely faithful to the experience of its authors and their respective algorithms.
Answers on a postcard.

This can only be a good move for the international market to move away from playing films from the major studios.
Biggest grossing film in the world this year is Chinese anyway.
Wah wah.

24.09.2025 12:08 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Coming up 26 October: two films about Bristol. The Newcomers, made by John Boorman before he went on to Hollywood fame, helped launched BBC2 in 1964. In Money into Light he returns to Bristol 25 years later. Thanks to @swsilents.bsky.social for partnership and @filmhubsw.bsky.social for support.
21.09.2025 09:06 โ ๐ 6 ๐ 6 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0A fairly niche observation, but I love that Japanese techno-drama HAPPYEND by Neo Sora has Boiler Room star DJ ยฅรU$UKโฌ ยฅUK1MAT$U smashing out bangers in the first five minutes.
HAPPYEND is out on general release this weekend in the UK
Got notes for the 4K restoration of BARRY LYNDON this afternoon.
Letโs gooooo.
Once of the best film festivals in the South West of England, and #Frightfest fans should definitely get a ticket if youโre around next weekend.
12.09.2025 09:51 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Ha. I do watch franchise films(!)
The UK labels I tend to buy from are Indicator, Second Sight, Radiance and 101 Films. But I also look at Hot UK Deals and this page: www.blu-ray.com/deals/?sortb...
Nice touch of Dardennes about it. Thought it was ace - like some of the social realism of Andrea Arnold.
10.09.2025 13:23 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Yo! I still use Amazon for my sins, Rarewaves is also a good shout - youโll still find most of what I buy in Fopp.
What kind of thing are you after?
Iโve cut down my purchases this year and being more selective. Even got rid of some to the charidee shop.
My last purchases were:
Thought BEATING HEARTS (2024) was an exceptional premium French indie with a touch of cult sheen.
Loved the two- part heightened drama - nothing wildly radical, but enjoyable solid story about love across the divides.
Reminded me a bit of Pete Travisโ under-seen CITY OF TINY LIGHTS (2012)
Now on ๐ฎ๐

Donโt think anything has come close since.
Iโm well aware of the converse. Young counterculture critics referencing something so oblique, like itโs common knowledge. Jog on, try-hards.
Nothing seems like it comes from the heart any more. Itโs all tooled for posturing or pull-quotes.
Mainstream film criticism has become so staid. Likely because the PR system has become so efficient at blacklisting defamatory voices. Most stuff I encounter reads like pseudo marketing.
Is there an Armond White or Pauline Kael waiting in the wings, scribbling away that Iโm unaware of?
