The draft Constitution is Part I of a larger package (Bill 1, Loi constitutionnelle de 2025 sur le Québec) including further significant proposals: a Quebec Constitutional Autonomy Act (Part II), a Constitutional Council Act (Part III), textual amendments, likely ultra vires, to the federal

The draft proposes for QC legislature to purport to make several textual amendments to the Constitution Act, 1867 (as in Bills 96 & 4; similarly Saskatchewan First Act). @emmettmacfarlane.com has argued extremely persuasively that this is ultra vires: digitalcommons.osgoode.yorku.ca/ohlj/vol60/i...

Pew Survey: Only 31% Of Trans People Report Being Accepted By Their Parents The survey comes as transgender people experience a legal assault from the far-right in the United States.

One of the most perverse ideas on the anti-trans side is that trans people are instantly affirmed and celebrated by everyone when they come out and that acceptance is driving a social contagion.

It's the ultimate form of gaslighting against our community.

Quote from the piece by author Laura-Stella Enonchong: “Formalism aspires to clarity and precision – this decision achieved neither.”

Opposition leader Kamto will stay excluded from Cameroon’s 🇨🇲 presidential elections on 12 October, held the Constitutional Council.

LAURA-STELLA ENONCHONG criticises the Council's narrow formalism and explains the repercussions for Cameroon’s fragile democracy.

I just got to Peacehaven mosque. It’s a small place. Forensics are here, half a dozen police cars, a few ppl left bouquets of flowers

There were two ppl inside the mosque when the attackers tried to get in. They got out in time thankfully and no one was injured

Read some of the comments on the below post

In my heart I know they don’t reflect the majority, but they are contributing to a climate of fear on our streets, universities, NHS, politics, progressive spaces etc

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who cares enough to argue with them

Today, I drove an hour and a half with my wife and a couple friends to pick up a neighbor who was summarily, inexplicably arrested by ICE at a check-in ten days ago and then just as inexplicably released, 100 miles from home today. It was a happy occasion, all things considered, but...

Jesus Christ. DHS has held this guy in the hospital handcuffed to a bed and under constant guard for over a MONTH without ANY warrant or even ANY steps taken towards putting him into the removal system!

A WILD ONE: A man broke his leg during an arrest by ICE at a car wash south of L.A.

ICE has held him under 24/7 guard at a hospital, registering him under a pseudonym, for *37 days* without telling him why.

A judge has ordered his immediate release.

I visited the apartment building ICE raided on Tuesday today. Story to come, but you can walk right in. Half of the apartments have no doors on them. Children's stuff abandoned in some flats. *Citizen* residents told me they were arrested and held for hours in zipties. This is America

1) Either the ECHR significantly constraints government action. Then "it has to go because of that" means "we plan to, want to and will do things that are currently considered to violate human rights" or
2) Human rights protection remains the same. Then... why leave the ECHR?

04.10.2025 09:26 — 👍 63    🔁 20    💬 2    📌 0

I would add one thing: we are bombarded with two claims: 1) the UK can leave the ECHR without lowering human rights protection and 2) the ECHR significantly limits what the government can do and hence the UK has to leave it.
These cannot both be true. /1

Anti-Zionism is not antisemitism but saying this in response to a post about a Yom Kippur attack on a synagogue outside of Israel absolutely is antisemitism.

Hope that clears this up.

We are at the brink of an effort, which would have substantial US support under this government, to construct a new global regime of counter-dissident cooperation. We have to stop that.

The US implementing third country deportations as a means to evade non-refoulement obligations, and the mass deportations of Russians and Iranians in cooperation with those states, are huge blows to international norms against cooperation in TNR.

One note: I wrote this essay months ago, per the publication schedule, and so I was modest (though direct) about what the US had done. It’s gotten much worse since then, even in the last few weeks.

I expect transnational repression to continue to grow as a problem, especially as the crackdown on migration continues to spread in most receiving countries, and the US in particular takes a sledgehammer to norms protecting non-citizens’ speech, assembly, and association rights.
