City to ban wood heating The Dutch city of Utrecht is planning to ban wood stoves and wood-burning fireplaces by 2030.

The city of Utrecht in the Netherlands plans to end residential wood burning, both for recreation and heating. The phase out process is already underway, with the plan set to come fully into effect in 2030. This approach needs to be rolled out at the federal level.

Free or cheap access to firewood is a widespread issue in many countries. When the cost of installing and running electrical heating alternatives like heat pumps remains disproportionately high you can understand the resistance. Legislation and subsidies will be needed to help drive the transition.
