I see 2. Definitely. Therefore I presume CED must've been taken over by AI. As a result, I'll never read it again.

Big generators have control governors and AVR which can be set up in various ways. They can match, say, steam demand to regulate grid frequency or just open the taps and let the unit do what it can and to hell with control (yes I've worked in countries where frequency has little control as a result)

What you appear to be referencing is a mechanism indicating error between actual generation and required generation. That would be a national grid control centre absolute to match the daily demand and supply, and is seemingly a way to say "yep, we did well at our job", or not. Is that the case?

...leader will know where the dusty cupboard is which contains their plant's most basic link up kit: his synchroscope (oscilloscope for men with real kit). The most important aspect of any grid knock out is the answer to one question: do you have black start? If so, rebuild your grid from there.

...your grid were to fail, oscillation would certainly be likely, but if sufficient inertia is there it will be absorbed and maybe some load shedding will keep everything hunky dory. But that's all frequency controlled. Basis synchronisation is performed via a 2 channel oscilloscope and every team..

...(totally dependent on grid 'size' or capacity) it doesn't vary in frequency or oscillate. Indeed, the bigger the grid and the more inertia it has, the less it is likely to oscillate and it can absorb local disturbances of even large power sources without collapsing. So if your biggest unit on ...

Excuse me? I thought you wanted to knock out their grid? πŸ˜„

You've clearly never worked in construction and commissioning of any power units. The grid is a system with 3 sinusoidal current phases which are synchronised for every power unit on them. Once a grid has "bulk"....

...a couple of years back due to the collapse of a local network. Re-establishing power to the network was done by adding power units back to the (still operating) main network which acted as its "black start" and sector by sector its reconnected by waveforms, not a clock.

The point is, that's unnecessary and therefore not a weakness. All grids work on the basis of synchronised generator current waveform (whatever the type may be from large steam to wind to battery etc). If a grid fails, all jt needs is what I described. I'm the UK we had a partial grid failure...

In theory, all you need is a battery to start that 1st unit, nothing else.

If the grid network is broken and shuts down completely, all it requires is a large enough black start unit to fire up on diesel or gas, put that onto the grid (basically itself) then you start every other unit in turn hanging off that initial unit and grow the grid.

They are synchronised on the grid frequency waveforms ie the generator output current sinusoidal waveform. There is no external clock as such. Synchronisation is essentially as basic as 2 waveforms from 2 differing units brought to coincidence, then closing the breaker link to the new unit added.

Substations are the prime energy target as the screw up their nodes. Add to that that, as you say, they carry few spares and few are even like for like; a bit of a headache. Manufacture time for a power transformers isn't weeks, but many months. This'll hurt.

Superb news. About time the Russian 'grid' was stress tested: and it failed, as expected. Some of those gas power plants will be well out of their technical expertise to repair. We need to learn never to sell Siemens, GE or Mitsubishi plant to them ever again. Starve them of tech so they're stranded

UKRAINE & SWEDEN SIGN DEAL FOR SALE OF 150 GRIPEN E/F

Ukraine has signed a deal with Sweden for the intent to buy 150 fighters. These are likely to be mostly the F variant with the new Rolls Royce variant engine, which is said to be superior to the US supplied engine on the E variant.
