Russia to officially quit Europe’s anti-torture treaty Moscow is set to formally withdraw from a cornerstone human rights commitment.

Russia plans to officially withdraw from the Council of Europe’s treaty for the prevention of torture.

The prohibition against torture is a bedrock principle of international law. We condemn this decision.

During asylum processes, detention must be strictly justified by grounds clearly defined.

Even when such grounds exist, *alternatives* to detention must first & foremost be considered.

Alternatives are often as effective.
