Adjectives in English absolutely have to be in this order: opinion-size-shape-colour-origin-material-purpose Noun. So you da. Have a lovely little old rectangular green French silver whittling knife. But if you mess with that word order in the slightest you'll sound like a maniac. It's an odd thing that every English speaker uses that list, but almost none of us could write it out. And since since comes before colour, green great dragons can't exist."

Been seven years since I first read this, on the English language's *completely universal but totally invisible* adjective hierarchy, and I can honestly say I've thought about it most days since.

The last time anyone dared to say "living in the wreckage of the future" to me, it was my mother, it was right after I learned that my husband had had a stroke, it was the right thing to say, and I responded by screaming. I screamed until all I could see was a bruise-colored haze, until I felt the scream vibrating in all the bones of my face. Then I beat the wall so hard that I was afraid I'd splintered a knuckle. For the rest of the day, my throat and fist ached. The pain scolded me. I had terrified my dog, and my mother, and myself. I am, it turns out, violently opposed to the idea that I can't control the future.
Alcoholics also say that even if things don't get better, they get different. That one's less maddening to hear, a more straightforward comfort. Even from the time I sat down to start writing thisβ€”sat down much later than I intended to, thanks to the three hours (so far) of phone jockeying with my insurance and my pharmacyβ€”even that quickly, things have gotten different. A good cry will do that, that's the thing I always forget about giving myself over to one. It will feel like a hole opening up in the earth, and I will berate myself for sliding down it with so little resistance, but I always hit the bottom of the hole eventually, and the climb back up is never as bad as I think it'll be.

20 years ago we were suing teenagers for millions of dollars because they were torrenting a single Metallica album and now billionaires are demanding the free right to every work in history, so that they can re-sell it.

The law only ever serves capital.

I love how rich news pundits will tell us to write to our lawmakers if we’re unhappy about something like healthcare instead of celebrating a pew pewing of an evil πŸ’© bag, but I’ve literally been emailing each of my representatives since Oct 7 2023, and haven’t received a response from any of them.
