I am, it turns out, violently opposed to the idea that I can't control the future. Alcoholics also say that even if things don't get better, they get different. That one's less maddening to hear, a more straightforward comfort. Even from the time I sat down to start writing this—sat down much later than I intended to, thanks to the three hours (so far) of phone jockeying with my insurance and my pharmacy—even that quickly, things have gotten different. A good cry will do that, that's the thing I always forget about giving myself over to one. It will feel like a hole opening up in the earth, and I will berate myself for sliding down it with so little resistance, but I always hit the bottom of the hole eventually, and the climb back up is never as bad as I think it'll be.
