The front cover of a book entitled "Devon's Home Front Diaries"

I was so excited to receive this book last week - it's about life on the home front in Devon in #WW2, & features diaries from someone in my #OneNameStudy! The book is by Todd Gray, who used diaries from the #MassObservation Archive to bring this interesting period of history to life #GenHour

Getting the most from cemetery records Todayโ€™s post is an interloper amongst my little โ€˜Ancestral Tourismโ€™ series. It follows on from Part 1: Churches and Churchyards, Part 2: Municipal & other Public Cemeteries anโ€ฆ

My latest blogpost has just published. It's aimed at Intermediate level family history researchers or people moving on from Beginners to Intermediate, and looks at how we can layer up and cross reference information from burial records.

Photo of a set of three carved wooden panels (two narrow ones with a wider one in the middle), found on the side of one of the box pews at Fawsley St Mary. On the left, there is what appears to be a dog; the leaf-like shapes above it may represent the dog's barking calls, in effect medieval 'speech bubbles'. The central panel features a trio of upright creatures with pointed ears and long, slim tails; the smallest is on the left, the largest - playing a fiddle-like instrument with a bow, is on the right. Beneath those creatures are several circular shapes, each with two projections on either side, possibly representing bowls. At the bottom a peculiar quadruped with a ridged back and a short, thick tail raised like an elephant's trunk stands with its head buried in a large cooking pot which has three feet. Finally, the panel on the right has the head and shoulders of a man wearing a hat, below which there is a bear-like creature with its feet on the left side of the panel; it has a collar around its neck from which a chain descends to a fixing point on the left side of the panel. At the bottom, rotated sideways and facing upwards, is the head and shoulders of a man holding a horn to his mouth with his left hand.

Managed another short visit to Fawsley, my local #OnePlaceStudy parish, yesterday. As the sun/cloud ratio didn't favour landscape photography I spent more time in the church. The run-up to Halloween seems a great time to share some of its bonkers-but-brilliant box pew carvings. ๐Ÿงต #OnePlaceWednesday
