Herb Pennock (241-162, 3.60 ERA, 1,227 strikeouts), of the Athletics, Red Sox, and Yankees, one of the greatest southpaws ever, died of a brain hemorrhage on January 30, 1948. He was just 53. Later that year, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Few managers won as consistently as Billy Southworth, who was born #OTD in 1893.

From 1941-45, his @cardinals.com teams averaged 101 wins per season while capturing three NL pennants and two World Series titles.

"From June 6 to July 30, 1968, Bob Gibson pitched eleven straight complete games, giving up only three runs. Gibson pitched eight shut-outs in that string."

Simply phenomenal at that time, and unheard of today.

Effectively Wild Episode 2352: Turn Every Paige

I spent some time on a great baseball podcast talking about the Satchel Paige Project. My segment is 59 minutes in, though Meg and Ben are always a great listen. This was funβ€”I could talk about Paige every day if you insist.

Ichiro Suzuki had 126 hits in a 63-game span of 2004. Yes, that's an average of 2 hits per game for over 2 months.

No one else has ever done that in baseball history.

In two days, one of my favorite ballplayers of all time goes into the @baseballhall.org. We all know that Ichiro had as many tools as the game allowed. So let’s also take a moment to appreciate another of his tremendous talents: acting.

Yesterday, I discussed the changing dynamics within the Philadelphia club. Cherokee Fisher was released, and Joe Borden was brought in to replace him at pitcher. But July 25 is a Sunday in 1875, so no baseball.

Let's talk about what's going on around the league and why it matters.

The Ecology of Baseball Stadiums | Baseball Prospectus Nature is everywhere, except sometimes where the grass is greenest.

New from me at BP: An essay about the ecology of baseball stadiums, which stand as beautiful lifeless monuments to an era of urban command over nature, one that is quickly dying out. On ballparks, parks, and the growing divide between the two:
