Sometimes I'm an akita but you might know me as Raymond the GSD or SaberTail. Former particle physicist, but now I write software. (40, Male, straight)-ish. SF Bay area. I'm probably not like you remember from pre-2020.

plus the Enterprise D is ridiculously huge so it's not like they needed the space. Voyager had Neelix repurpose the captain's dining room into the Mess Hall, but it was a much smaller ship

all those ensigns hot bunking on the lower decks have got to have a place to hang out, but we never see it because why would the senior staff go there

My strategy of "keep really busy" and "get out of the house every single day" seems to have worked so far at keeping the SAD at bay this year. October 2023 was one of the lowest months I can remember. October 2025 was pretty good, and I feel like I'm on an upward trajectory

A comic strip titled The Amazing World of Tomorrow.
A food delivery robot cooler drives down a sidewalk.
It crashes into a rental scooter.
It backs up.
It crashes into the rental scooter again. The scooter wobbles.
The scooter falls to the ground as the food delivery robot backs up again.
A driverless taxi crashes into both the scooter and the food delivery robot sending them flying.

And he was!
This was a spooky film, and it executed well on the premise. The dog they found was great.

Akitober is over, but I'm remaining an akita for the time being.

But also I was able to acquire sabertail dot org, and since that's how a lot of people know me, I'm going to use that for my handle on here

Tonight's film: V/H/S/Halloween

I was creeped out more than scared a lot of the time, but it's pretty much another in the series. I had fun watching it!

(and this is why it's not either/or. If you imagine fan blades pushing air downward, that will increase the pressure below and decrease it above)

30.10.2025 01:54 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I'd point at conservation of matter and gas laws. If N1 molecules flow in one side of some volume in time t, and N2 leave, then you have (N1-N2) less/more than you did. More stuff in the volume leads to higher pressure assuming constant temperature.

Yep! You do see a Bernoulli effect, but the faster movement is more of a consequence of the pressure differential as the cause of it. It's complicated fluid dynamics so it's not exactly one or the other.

Wings produce lift because they redirect some horizontal airflow downward. Both from the air hitting the bottom of the wing and from air following the curve of the top of the wing via laminar flow. Newton's laws.

my technical german is bad, but bringing up Bernoulli's principle is mostly confusing here because anytime you're pushing down on a fluid (and thus producing lift) the pressure will be higher below than above, regardless of the velocities involved

Wasted a good chunk of my evening trying to track down the source of beeping in my living room. Turned out to be a xiaomi smart speed cube that has a non-rechargeable, non-replaceable battery that finally decided to give out. Fuck me.

At least I found what it was and got rid of it.

Book finished: 1491 by Charles C. Mann
Not a good book.

I'd recommend *American Colonies* by Alan Taylor instead. It's better written, not full of speculation, and Taylor doesn't do shit like compare Native American corvΓ©e systems to Stalinist gulags.

Abstract

Knots emerge in various fields of mathematics and physics today. We show that knots indeed appear as stable solitons in a realistic extension of the standard model of particle physics that provides the QCD axion and right-handed neutrinos. This result suggests that, during the early Universe, a [highlighted]β€œknot dominated era”[/highlighted] may have existed, where knots were a dominant component of the Universe, and this scenario can be tested through gravitational wave observations. Furthermore, we propose that the end of this era involves the collapse of the knots via quantum tunneling, leading to the generation of matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe.
