I am finding an unreasonable amount of joy in my new fountain pen and new tiny pen holder and how earnestly she is doing her work.

Like, the bloodbath of (video) games journalism has gotten ink spilled because there’s outlets still clinging to life to note it.

But TTRPGs are a niche still-smaller by orders of magnitude, & the very few secure spots that were available that allowed someone to dig in have evaporated.

I’d mildly venture to say that even if I used the most capacious definition possible of “TTRPG journalist” (ie one that included me) you could fit all of them into a classroom.

And if you’re talking folks who make TTRPGs a beat they cover even CLOSE to full-time at a major pub?

He just DIED y’all.

I had this a lot growing up and it still has lasting effects. And I think what galls me is that there were already advice and guidelines to being a better and supportive parent by then, but the idea of *learning* to parent beyond what had been handed down was anathema.

True experts in subjects both small and large are going to be highly demanded because it's only this level of knowledge that can distinguish the true participants in a conversation with hard-earned subject-area literacy from the soi-disant.

I feel like the LLM era is the perfect time for someone to relaunch the text-a-librarian reference service. It doesn't have to just be text, we can do email. But you can submit a question and a reference librarian working remotely will respond to it within an hour with verifiable resources.
