Kenya achieves elimination of human African trypanosomiasis or sleeping sickness as a public health problem The World Health Organization (WHO) has validated Kenya as having eliminated human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) or sleeping sickness as a public health problem, making it the tenth country to reach this important milestone. HAT is the second neglected tropical disease (NTD) to be eliminated in Kenya: the country was certified free of Guinea worm disease in 2018.

@raganwald Ah, ownership of a Rietveld chair is not in my future, this was a 1920s exemplar in the museum collection.

But you are onto something with building a classic. I've looked into Enzo Mari, autoprogrettazzione, "self-projects". Perhaps the next mountain is already in view.

@raganwald Ah, sunny Malmö in Sweden.

I've now inhaled most of the Hamburg museum called MK&G, where Verner Panton's plastic orange bar interior is set up to be looked at. Stendahl'd-out, we slowly made it to the train station.

I took a million pictures. One day, I'll sort through them.

It […]

Fraud in science journals, a rot at the core. This is like bad, OK.

The dirt ("stratigraphical unit") that the statue lies in tells us when it was deposited and under what circumstances. It may be a layer of rubble with a flat compacted top surface, laid out to landscape the site for a new use. Or it may be the sediments of a sacred spring. Or the disordered […]

Did you know that the exact contents of the dirt a marble statue is found in is more important to most archaeologists -- who are after all not sculpture specialists -- than the statue itself? That dirt is what differentiates an archaeological find with a context from a rootless art object […]

R.L. Stevenson, the author of Treasure Island, was unaware of shipworm in the Atlantic. In "The Merry Men" he speculates whether a ship might still be sitting intact on the seafloor after 300 years.

Slovenia expects an explanation regarding the actions of Austrian authorities at the Peršman Museum | GOV.SI The Government of the Republic of Slovenia is greatly concerned about the incident that took place yesterday, on 27 July 2025, at the Peršman Museum, one of the most important memorial sites for Carinthian Slovenians. As the scene of one of the most horrific crimes of the Nazi regime against the Slovenian population in Carinthia, any intervention in this place is particularly sensitive.

Män i kjol – fackets sista stridsåtgärd i hettan Andreas Nyman: Det blev en del skämt om skottar och något enstaka ”madame”

Swedish transport unions have advocated for shorts in uniforms during hot weather, but the option keeps disappearing with new contractors.

An effective tactic has been for male employees to wear skirts instead, which has led to the reinstatement of shorts thrice: in 2002, 2013, and now again.

Pair of Roundback Armchairs: Lohan Type | Cleveland Museum of Art In history, China moved from an original floor culture to high chairs and tables, developing a unique tradition of craftsmanship. Although still relatively unexplored, the manufacturing and styles of furniture differ by region. These horseshoe-back armchairs were made in Jiangsu province. Their simplicity and minimalist elegance are characteristic of Suzhou-style furniture and aesthetics. The backs of the chairs are made of seven pieces of wood, joined and secured with an inserted wooden pin, a mortar-tenon technique that appeared in its earliest form in Neolitihic fragments of the Hemudu culture.

Strong Danish mid-century vibe in this Chinese piece.

Upper Paneling from a Sacristy Armoire | Cleveland Museum of Art The imagery on the inset panels is the result of a technique known as intarsia, the skilled inlaying of woods of different colors to create a type of mosaic, popular during the 15th and 16th centuries in Italy for the decoration of paneling and furniture for studies, small rooms, and church sacristies. This large set of five intarsia panels comes from an unknown Florentine church. In its original setting the panels rested upon a row of similarly decorated cupboards (a sacristy armoire) which were used for the storage of liturgical vestments and books. This panel would have therefore been seen at eye level. The central panel depicts the Resurrection of Christ. The two outside panels depict the emblem of Lorenzo de Medici-three plumes encircled by a jeweled ring above a scrolling ribbon containing the Latin word SEMPER (Always). Lorenzo de Medici (1449-92) was the ruler of Florence when this sacristy armoire was constructed and was the likely patron. It seems to be the work of Giuliano da Maiano, an architect and intarsia-maker also responsible for the intarsia in the sacristy of Florence Cathedral.

Renaissance woodworking was something.

I see that Malmö poet Pär Thörn was the reviewer of that book that I liked, back in 2008; https://www.gp.se/kultur/skrona-att-skratta-med.237464f2-7907-4cf8-8681-1d185bae3a7e
