Gavin Newsom signs law overhauling local zoning to build more housing After weeks of waiting, California’s governor signed a bill that will allow mid-rise apartment buildings near major transit stops in California’s biggest metro areas.

Today Newsom signed Senate Bill 79 which will make it much easier to build housing around transit across the state. I have not always been a Newsom fan but this is big and a huge kudos to him.

It's crazy to see just how few principles Trump and those around him have. They spent a lot of time talking about defending free speech but now are doing more to undermine than anyone has done in decades.

It's hard to imagine a more clear cut violation of the first amendment than the FCC threatening to pull licenses unless someone is fired and then the president saying no one on TV is allowed to criticize me. Yet we still have maga cultists trying to deny it.

This is so messed up.

The past week has really cemented to me how bad algorithmic social media is.

You are so heavily incentivised to post outrageous stuff because that is what gets engagement.

This means you also end up seeing a ton of extreme views from the "other side" which further feeds radicalization.

The lesson here is that you need to be able to build fast because once you get something built the opposition tends to collapse.

The reason for this is that status quo bias is incredibly strong.

People see something new and imagine all these possible downsides the vast majority of which either never happen or are small potatoes.

Once something is built it becomes the status quo and no one finds it threatening.

If you follow housing politics you will see a lot of people advocating to block the construction of new housing but you almost never see people advocating for them to be torn down.

Most of the time if a controversial apartment building does get approved and built it just becomes part of the city.

Yeah it's almost like they are always claiming to be reacting to some perceived slight. Like they are reactionaries or something.

The murder of Charlie Kirk is horrific.

However we also do not need to pretend like he was a moderate.

If describing Leviticus 20:13 which calls for the execution of homosexuals, as "God's perfect law when it comes to sexual matters." Is a moderate position then we are truly fucked.

How is it not a bigger deal that the President pardoned his supporters who tried to overturn an election, and are now engaged in various crimes?
