I was so close just now to writing a response to a comment on Twitter with something I disagreed with about tennis. I actually wrote it, and then I saw the name I was about to reply to and deleted it...

I got THAT close to being that nobody who tried to mansplain tennis to Martina Navratilova.

I don't like anything that has anything to do with Dubai. Even if it's just a name.

The Reality of AI Animal Content – Sedgwick County Zoo If you spend any time on social media, you’ve probably seen them – bears bouncing on trampolines, apes caught on doorbell cameras, or β€œrescued” wild animals acting in ways that seem too good to be…

Love to see the Sedgwick County Zoo putting out a good explainer on why GenAI slop videos of animals are a problem & how to identify them! It’s succinct, easy to read, and doesn’t shame people for not knowing better. A+ useful link to share with family and friends.

I've often seen hunters wanting or trying to get all hunting protected at cultural heritage. I've every time said that it's a really bad idea and an admission of loss in rational discussions about hunting to try and resort to "screw you, you can't stop me."

Indeed it is.

History is useful here: Those defending bullfights in other countries have in the past tried to get that recognized, and been refused, by UNESCO.

The case for bullfighting as "cultural heritage" is bad, but the case for fox hunting is even worse. So thankfully this will not succeed.

Sweatpants with many seams

Sweatpants with many seams

I don't understand why some designers of clothes make so many unnecessary seams. As far as I'm concerned, each seam drastically decreases the wearing comfort of the clothes, so the objective, if I designed clothes, would be as few seams as possible. Am I the weird one?

It falls under the mental illness called religion. Most of these people, at least in hunting circles and especially hunting in Africa, are deeply Christian, and their favourite part of the Bible is the part that says men have dominion over all animals and that all animals are for men to use.

This is unfortunately not far from rhetoric that you might hear in some of the more fundamentalist hunting and sustainable use circles.

Offit told me that Kennedy is a "liar" and a
"terrible human being." I asked him to explain. "It doesn't matter what I say," Offit said. "He thinks the medical journals are in the pocket of the industry, he thinks that the government is in the pocket of the industry, he thinks I'm in the pocket of industry, and he's wrong." Offit continued: "If he has data showing he's right, then fucking publish it. He can't, because he doesn't have those data."
I asked Offit if he saw a way to reverse the public's rising distrust in science. "I don't think there is any way to regain that trust other than have the viruses do the education, and the bacteria do the education, and then people will realize they paid way too high a cost," he said.

Last time I was at the dentist, he said my gums had receded a bit since my previous visit because I brush too hard, and it made me wonder if he could just remember the exact state of my gums or if he had looked at notes before I came in. Asking him feels like asking a magician to reveal his tricks.

Can dentists remember their patients' teeth just from patient names or do they need reminders? Like how the rest of us remember and associate faces with names? I wonder if my dentist may forget my face but remembers my teeth. But maybe some teeth are also more memorable than others, same as faces...

But to argue against my own point there, I guess it would be harder to police that kind of exam today too. When I last wrote that kind of exam essay, all they needed to do was have us not drag wired internet into the exam room. Restricting internet is hard now. And some AI can do some work offline.
