I’m getting myself ready for a lung biopsy tomorrow. I’m tired but can’t tell if it’s the daylight savings, the poor sleep, the prednisone taper, or the anxiety. Either way, I’m about to lay down for a nap and hope that I can have an hour to not think about tomorrow.

It’s tempting to pick up and find a spot where non-sensical governments can’t reach. Sigh… resist and endure out of pure spite.

No one saw this small act of independence, my defiance against a disease that has taken so much. But today I reclaimed a part of something I lost last summer, my ability to walk up and down stairs. This is a small things that’s actually a very big deal.

Today was different. I gathered up the dishes, my mug, and walked right past the stair lift and used my legs to walk down the stairs like the badass strong woman that I am. But here’s the thing. I haven’t been able to do this in months.

Most mornings when I leave my room, after the pills have taken effect, I gather my coffee mug and ride the stair lift downstairs to start my writing day. Generally, I don’t have the arm strength to carry my breakfast dishes with me, so I leave them for my husband to gather later in the day.

I live with a rare neuromuscular disease that requires I take pills that keep my muscles moving every four hours. Some mornings, I can’t move well until I have my pills so this routine has become a small luxury in managing my condition.

This morning, as I left my bedroom, I gathered up the dirty plate, an uneaten banana, and the empty coffee mug from the breakfast my husband brought to me this morning. It’s our routine. He brings me a small breakfast and coffee so I don’t take my morning pills on an empty stomach.

I am glad to report that both of my nurses and several other patients were wearing masks yesterday. With so many airborne viruses floating around and with the gag order on our national health orgs we must protect ourselves and each other.
