my only hope would be to add my incredibly niche feature to the game myself in an update. but the game doesn't really get updates anymore, the maintainer has started to move on. i'm still plotting to get the game updated one last time for other reasons, but it'd still be one hell of a hail mary

in an ideal world you'd lose 50 coins on first death and 100 coins on subsequent deaths, and if you don't have enough it's game over

it's just too bad there's no way to script this *at all.* none, zilch, not even with the type of black magic that the threemixes are already using

it is becoming increasingly clear that i need some kind of lives system for the threemix marathon. having to start all the way over on a six minute run from one minor death is just too painful

problem is that the game has no way to prevent or even detect death

i really hate feeling like i have to *beg* people to play retrush. absolutely not fair at all

...i still live under the specter of the person who told me i was "bad at drawing" in high school. i'm better at drawing now but only because everything i draw is invisibly judged by everyone i love and myself

i hope one day i make something that explodes way out of my orbit so i can no longer obsessively count who has and hasn't seen it

"but why can't you just make things for yourself?" because i did it for all of my childhood and i discovered that it is a very lonely existence, and that life is much better shared with others

the core issue is that i was recently made *acutely* aware of several friends who will not interact with anything i post unless i practically beg them to, and it has poisoned my ability to take the validation of *any* of my friends at face value

"why can't i just be happy with what i have" i say to myself, looking at the list of my friends who like my stuff and realizing that even that hasn't made me happy because it functions as an inverse list of friends who haven't seen it (or, worse, saw it and chose to pass it up)

i have been absolutely neurotic about external validation lately and it is Not Healthy Whatsoever

i'm once again at the point with retrush where i have to tear myself away from having fun with the finished levels to work on the unfinished levels

(this is a very very good sign)

to fix that i need to rethink how the level "pools" are organized, but i don't have any good ideas yet. right now the "level intro" pools add up to a quarter of the whole run, far from ideal!

biggest headache is going to be making something cohesive within the technical limitations i'm working with

another problem i'm facing is that the threemix marathon mode feels a little stale right now – i think this is because the first half of it feels like it always plays out more or less the same, and that's a huge flaw for something that i want people to replay many times

ideally with additive time i still want the player to feel some pressure from the clock, but every player has different skill levels and i don't want the clock to be *too much* pressure either. it's gonna be a difficult balancing act but i'm confident this is the right approach

one big change is that checkpoints now *add* time, rather than completely resetting the clock like in the main retrush campaign. currently it's tuned to give way too much time but i've got some ideas on how to fix that, like a hard cap of 90 "seconds" on the clock (2.5sec in SMB1 = 1sec real time)

it's been six months since the last time i worked on the retrush threemixes but i'm finally back to it 💙

kinda felt like i was hitting a dead end with balancing it but i have made huge strides by rethinking some core parts of how it works
