discord's thread feature kinda sucks but the ability to turn a channel into something other than a linear stream of messages is one i really gel with

my discord servers are cute little art projects with vibes that are immaculately curated and their medium just happens to be "fluid discussion space"

iirc xmpp federation ended up being too broken to be the way forward but there was a lot of talk about the twitter API becoming a universal standard for microblogging, and there are super early versions of the iOS allow you to set a custom API endpoint
