But an overall similarity is a sympathetic character caught by social system they have limited control of. Sometimes they escape (NIGHT OF THE DEMON), often they donβt.

Anne of the Indies (1951). Jean Peters as a pirate captain is a diabolical stroke of casting genius. Also Louis Jordan as βFrenchieβ, Herbert Marshall bringing dimension to the rum-soaked doctor role, and James Robertson Justice in an eye-patch. Fun, right? Yes! But there's A LOT more to this pic
16.10.2025 08:20 β π 11 π 3 π¬ 1 π 0Most Hollywood films do everything they can to βsutureβ that is, totally invest, the audience into the characters. Tourneur does some of that of course, but also does unexpected things to distance us and make us see other things in the story. A specific example is that he tried NOT to do close-ups.
16.10.2025 08:47 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Jacques Tourneurβs entire body of work can be challenging to summarize, but itβs helpful to understand heβs interested in how systems work inside a certain culture, more so than the outcome of a particular character. This gives his films a vibe & quality different than most other Hollywood films.

People often ask me where to start watching DARK SHADOWS, since there are 1,200+ episodes.
One good place is ep 276, when Barnabas literally kills off the storyline that preceded him. After that, it's his show.
Watch tonight at 12am ET on Pluto TVβs 24/7 #DarkShadows channel, or anytime on-demand.
