Yes, I’d like to think of my earlier comment as general way to look at his overall work bc his films of course were all different. But an overall similarity is a sympathetic character caught by social system they have limited control of. Sometimes they escape (NIGHT OF THE DEMON), often they don’t.

Most Hollywood films do everything they can to “suture” that is, totally invest, the audience into the characters. Tourneur does some of that of course, but also does unexpected things to distance us and make us see other things in the story. A specific example is that he tried NOT to do close-ups.

Jacques Tourneur’s entire body of work can be challenging to summarize, but it’s helpful to understand he’s interested in how systems work inside a certain culture, more so than the outcome of a particular character. This gives his films a vibe & quality different than most other Hollywood films.
