A sawfly caterpillar rolled up. The back is black with white spots while the belly side is yellow with black spots. The rear-end which is caramel colored is raised up.

Larva of sawfly or hachigata-habachi (Tenthredo sp., possibly T. matsumurai). It is rolled up in defensive pose with the rear-end raised up. Head is tucked underneath. I love spotted creatures…. Tokikubo, Komoro, Nagano #Invertebrate #Insects

i don’t really know how to feel as an ecologist when i’m out surveying for invasives only to see all sorts of native insects like this velvet ant having the times of their lives
