I'm not religious, but I had often passed by Gillespie Kidd Coia's Grade 1 listed St Brides chapel in EK & thought it was intriguing.

I did visit last week, unfortunately for a funeral service, but was really impressed by the modernist design & interior.

It is a masterpiece.

Note: pic not mine.

A recurring theme in the war memorials of this era is the display of a wreath - as "Peace" is holding in this example.

Its been a symbol of victory since ancient Greek times (early 20c Olympiads also gave their champions' wreaths).

Here the wreath will represent the spiritual victory over death.

My dad worked for GPO Telephones then BT for over 30 years.

Before large exchanges like this, the GPO installed switching gear in individual tenement flats across Glasgow.

These were still operational up to the 1960s, including one he decommissioned in a 1st floor flat in Millbrae Rd in Langside.

He's probably just annoyed at having to maintain that wall to keep us Picts out.

In defence of so many high rises in Glasgow (once there were more per the pop. than any other Western European city) was they were seen as a quick solution to a housing shortage.

1960s building techniques mean they are now expensive to maintain, so down they come like the tenements before them.

How beautiful these are, but really astonishing they have survived.

I have visited here - and the Greeks consider Evans a vandal with his "treasure hunting" policy rather than archelogical procedures (even for the time) were ignored.

I'm sure someone can correct me if I am wrong, but the possible reason for the external staircase was to separate the indentured coal miners from mixing with the good common christian folk?

The eccentric William NcNichol Whyte providing such detail, like those cannonated turrets at roof level, obviously bombarding passer-bys!

Prints are available as a single tenement or the whole of Inverclyde Gardens, as it was then known, from our online store:

Would love to hear views of @fakehistoryhunter.net on the TV show, "Mayfair Witches", & the ridiculous Scottish accents & 17th century clothing (mainly mud coloured rags) and set design, also mud coloured & generic

IMO, there's no research been done to even remotely recreate how Scots lived then.

Holmwood Classical elegance and architectural tricks distinguish Alexander β€˜Greek’ Thomson’s finest domestic creation

It's been noted that FLW was influenced by Scottish architect & early architectural technologist, Alexander "Greek" Thomson, & when you compare the spaces and unconventional layout of buildings such as the Robbie House with AGTs Holmwood House (1858), you can see why.
