This is a story that requires more than the character limit. But since someone asked, I'm gonna tell it. Please note: your personal difficulty level may vary. None of us are playing the exact same game, here. Thread. πŸ‘‡

It's not well known that the congregation of the First African Baptist Church in Richmond donated approximately $40 towards Irish Famine Relief in 1847. Around 2,000 members of the congregation were enslaved, and only 150 were free. #twitterarchive

The IDF took 3D animations from the Scottish Maritime Museum, a cyberpunk project and other places to make shit up about Gaza, Lebanon and Iran and these were reproduced in international outlets for the past 2 years.

Way past its prime: how did Amazon get so rubbish? Sick of scrolling through junk results, AI-generated ads and links to lookalike products? The author and activist behind the term β€˜enshittification’ explains what’s gone wrong with the internet – and ...

This is so good from Cory Doctorow on all the tricks Amazon uses to get both consumers to pay more, and how businesses on the platform end up paying it 45-51 cents on every dollar.

Plus he rightly calls for regulatory change, not just individual consumer action

James Myers Thompson -- born on September 27, 1906, in Anadarko, Oklahoma -- was an American novelist and screenwriter known for his raw, psychologically intense crime fiction, particularly his pulp novels of the 1950s.

His work is characterized by its unsettling first-person narratives, cynical worldview, and exploration of the dark and twisted side of human nature.

Though underappreciated in his lifetime, he is now considered one of the masters of the hardboiled crime genre.

He died on April 7, 1977, in Hollywood, California, following a series of strokes. He technically died of complications from long-term alcoholism and self-inflicted starvation.

He died in relative obscurity, as most of his novels were out of print in the U.S. at the time. His work later experienced a major revival.

Three of his books, in no particular order:

Nothing More Than Murder (1949): Thompson's third novel and first mass-market paperback crime book. A small-town movie house owner, "Joe Wilmot," conspires with his unattractive lover to murder his wife, "Elisabeth," for insurance money and to take over their successful business. The plot soon unravels into blackmail, arson, and further violence.

The Getaway (1958): A crime story that follows bank robber "Doc McCoy" and his wife "Carol" as they go on the run to Mexico following a heist. As double-crosses and betrayals mount, their escape descends into chaos. The novel is especially famous for its surreal and chilling ending.

Pop. 1280 (1964): Narrated by "Nick Corey," the lazy and seemingly dim-witted sheriff of a tiny town with a population of 1,280. Underneath his folksy exterior, Nick hides a manipulative and psychopathic personality, and the story details how he uses his position to commit increasingly terrible crimes while manipulating everyone around him.

Two faves:

The Killer Inside Me (1952): A classic noir novel narrated by "Lou Ford," a mild-mannered, seemingly dim-witted deputy sheriff in a small Texas town. Underneath his pleasant exterior, Ford harbors a sadistic, homicidal "sickness," and the book chillingly details his manipulation of those around him as his dark impulses take over.

After Dark, My Sweet (1955): An escaped mental patient and former boxer, "William 'Kid' Collins," gets caught up in a kidnapping plot with an alcoholic widow and an ex-cop. The scheme quickly spirals out of control, fueled by Collins's mental instability.

Three more, in no particular order:

The Grifters (1963): A tale of deception and betrayal centered on a family of con artists. The story follows "Roy Dillon," a small-time grifter; his domineering mother, "Lilly;" and his femme fatale girlfriend, "Moira."

A Hell of a Woman (1954): "Frank 'Dolly' Dillon," a debt-ridden and alcoholic door-to-door salesman, gets involved in a robbery and murder scheme with a beautiful, rich seductress named "Mona." As Dolly's plans fall apart, his mind descends into madness.

Savage Night (1953): A claustrophobic thriller about "Charlie 'Little' Bigger," a small-statured but formidable hitman who goes undercover as a student to kill a business rival. The supposedly easy job is complicated when he becomes entangled with two women in the boarding house, and his own fractured psyche begins to break down.

Remembering novelist & screenwriter Jim Thompson, born September 27, 1906, Anadarko, OK (d. April 7, 1977). Several of his more than two-dozen pulp fiction crime novels are now considered classics. Many were made into films, incl. The Getaway, After Dark My Sweet, and The Grifters. More: alt text
