I understand that argument ... my desire for Oakland to succeed is a little stronger than my more abstract desire for California to have marginally more population vis-a-vis Texas for EC purposes

Sure some people prefer that but I don't think we should support public policy that encourages it on a mass scale in 2026, 2030, 2035 etc

I'm saying I've seen a lot from the YIMBY people I follow but nothing from anyone else (partially a function of who I follow) or any mainstream news

Has anyone not in the YIMBY community ever commented on this? What is their solution?

It's 2026 and even with all the overwide streets downtown that were empty BEFORE covid, Oakland still doesn't have any proper bikeways north to south across downtown.

Another very small step from Alaska to take a little market share back from Southwest, going from 2 to 3x daily on OAK-PDX. Alaska was always 3x before covid, and that was against 6-9x daily Southwest flights, vs 3-4x daily now

Yeah, I mean is there reason to think there will be coordination

Do you know if there is any coordination between the two cities? So the projects align in a logical way

BART and Mandela Station Partners LLC will start construction on the Transit-Oriented Development project at West Oakland Station this year.

Phase 1 is currently scheduled to start in mid-2026 with the construction of 240 affordable housing units on the southwest portion of the station parking lot.

This is a lost decade for investment in downtown Oakland. We already have cities that need more people and investment, in the center of already built metro areas. There is no need to go build new greenfield cities.

I don't recall exact affordability levels but it would be mostly market rate. No signs it will be built as planned.

Pretty disastrous mismanagement here, wasting tens of millions of dollars on SF move while in the end, doing nothing with the long time campus you own in Oakland.
