The BPS urges the Equality and Human Rights Commission to adopt an approach that protects the dignity, privacy, and rights of trans people, while supporting service providers in meeting their legal responsibilities. www.bps.org.uk/psychologist...
26.09.2025 06:27 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Proud to have made a historic statement on behalf of the British Psychological Society acknowledging its deep regret for publishing work that endorsed so-called conversion therapy and the harm caused to LGBTQ+ people.
Recognising this history matters.

We recommend the Code be strengthened by: Clarifying lawful approaches to trans inclusion. Providing practical examples of how trans-inclusive services (e.g., domestic abuse shelters, counselling services, community sport) have successfully balanced dignity, privacy, and legal compliance. Supporting providers in navigating the balancing of different service user needs and affirming that the rights and dignity of all groups, including both women and trans people, can be upheld without one group feeling excluded or unprotected. These changes would enhance clarity and promote psychologically safe service provision.
The BPS response to the EHRC's code of practice:
"the Code may create a chilling effect...undermining access to vital support and participation in everyday life for trans people"

Erasing LGBTQ+ health: the psychological impact of political censorship 4 mins read Recent U.S. directives have led to the removal of LGBTQ+ health resources from public health agency websites, alarming LGBTQ+ advocacy organisations and posing a threat to LGBTQ+ health on multiple fronts. Written by Dr Adam Jowett. Published 13 February 2025.
Trump's Exec Orders have reportedly led to US public health agencies taking down webpages with LGBT health info. In this blog article I explain why political censorship and anti-LGBT rhetoric is harmful and how community is key to resilience #LGBTHM www.law.ac.uk/resources/bl...

Key Insights From My Research on Civil Partnership
1) A Stepping Stone to Equality For many same-sex couples civil partnerships marked progress but viewed them as "second best" compared to marriage.
2) A Distinct Alternative For others, they offered an egalitarian alternative to marriage, allowing same-sex couples to define their relationships outside heteronormative traditions and expectations.
3) An Evolving Legal & Social Landscape Same-sex marriage changed the landscape. Fewer same-sex couples opted for Civil Partnership. Meanwhile, some different-sex couples opted for civil partnership as an egalitarian alternative
Today marks 20 years since the Civil Partnership Act 2004 was passed. Landmark legislation for LGBTQ equality π³οΈβπ It also marks 20(ish) years of my academic journey with my first involvement in research being prompted by this. It has remained a theme in my research ever since. Here are some takeaways
