Romancing Saga 2 is a really interesting one. Ditches leveling, gives you a large amount of control in how events proceed with a shitload of branching choices, and the inheritance system is a really interesting way to keep progress while forcing the player to change strategies

Yes!! A huge reason shorter RPGs like Clair Obscure or even the Mario RPG remake are hits imo! They ace the 25-35 hr window, instead of shooting for the 50+ hr playtimes of yore
