Nah, it's nothin' to do with skill or anything like that. I think now more than ever it's easy for a generation such as ours who are overexposed to so much media to make assumptions like that, especially when there's so much plagiarism going on nowadays. Easy to make the assumption.

It's a hard call to make. Movie composers were very tight back then. I think it would be equally possible for some form of homage, but who knows for sure? I can't imagine anyone composing music this similarly and thinking no one would ever notice, let alone Jerry Goldsmith!

The rest of the soundtrack is 100% percent original, since a lot of it is just motif's of the title theme, Cantos Profanae. And there's always still the chance Richard Band And Jerry Goldsmith were buddy's playing off one another. But yeah, it always bothered me.

And funny enough, he actually admitted to this on several occasions, stating "I couldn't take the script seriously, so I went in creating the score with the intention of imitating the tone by harkening back to psycho" So hey, at least he was honest.
