I told my girlfriend that if she ever forms a band that covers dance and disco from the 1970s, she needs to name it The Bee R Gees.

*nods*

I dunno... I talk to my girlfriend and a few other people I know in the industry about my programming projects, and gosh... it just feels like I know _nothing_ compared to them!

Operating system architecture is one of several giant holes in my knowledge of computers, and I feel like this one in particular makes me a much weaker software engineer than most of my peers...

Operating System in 1,000 Lines | OS in 1,000 Lines Write your first operating system from scratch, in 1K LoC.

I've been meaning to learn how to build an operating system from scratch for years now, and I think I'm gonna go through this tutorial as a launching point.

Not in the near future, sadly, _especially_ with all the anti-trans shit going on as well as the current situation with the shutdown. But yeah... one of these days I _really_ want to return to Connecticut sometime to see folks like you...

DUAL table - Wikipedia

Here's the Wikipedia article on DUAL with a little more history:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DUAL_ta...

07.11.2025 23:46 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

So... yeah... THAT WAS FUN. And I updated the Oracle form that started all the trouble in the first place by making it read-only and also making it so that that block wasn't based on DUAL anymore and figured out another way to retrieve and display the values, and then deploying it...

07.11.2025 23:46 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

He hung up, bounced the database, and everything was back to normal...

07.11.2025 23:44 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

With great restraint, I told him that DUAL only has, and has only _ever_ had, a single row and that he needed to delete one of them...

Me that very moment...

07.11.2025 23:42 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

And he answered:

07.11.2025 23:41 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

"I DID WHAT YOU TOLD ME AND IT'S NOT WORKING," he exclaimed. And so I once again asked him to run the same query again:

SELECT * FROM DUAL;

07.11.2025 23:40 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Aaaaaaaaaand... I got another call from the DBA, now sounding frantic...

07.11.2025 23:39 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Fifteen minutes later, after users had initially been able to get back in, the database went down again...

07.11.2025 23:38 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

And so he told me that he knew how to resolve the problem and I hung up the phone confident that the outage was resolved...

07.11.2025 23:38 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

He asked me what the purpose of DUAL was and I told him that it was vital to the RDBMS and that lots of internal processes actually rely on it, and that its being empty was the likely cause of the outage...

07.11.2025 23:37 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

His response made my heart sink:

SQL> no rows selected

07.11.2025 23:35 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

So... I quickly called the DBA back and asked him if he could somehow get to a SQL prompt and run a simple query:

SELECT * FROM DUAL;

07.11.2025 23:35 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0
