Operating system architecture is one of several giant holes in my knowledge of computers, and I feel like this one in particular makes me a much weaker software engineer than most of my peers...

If anyone else has any suggestions on better tutorials and/or additional materials, I am all eyes and ears...

I've been meaning to learn how to build an operating system from scratch for years now, and I think I'm gonna go through this tutorial as a launching point.

So... yeah... THAT WAS FUN. And I updated the Oracle form that started all the trouble in the first place by making it read-only and also making it so that that block wasn't based on DUAL anymore and figured out another way to retrieve and display the values, and then deploying it...

He hung up, bounced the database, and everything was back to normal...

With great restraint, I told him that DUAL only has, and has only _ever_ had, a single row and that he needed to delete one of them...

"I DID WHAT YOU TOLD ME AND IT'S NOT WORKING," he exclaimed. And so I once again asked him to run the same query again:

SELECT * FROM DUAL;

Aaaaaaaaaand... I got another call from the DBA, now sounding frantic...

Fifteen minutes later, after users had initially been able to get back in, the database went down again...

And so he told me that he knew how to resolve the problem and I hung up the phone confident that the outage was resolved...

He asked me what the purpose of DUAL was and I told him that it was vital to the RDBMS and that lots of internal processes actually rely on it, and that its being empty was the likely cause of the outage...

His response made my heart sink:

SQL> no rows selected

So... I quickly called the DBA back and asked him if he could somehow get to a SQL prompt and run a simple query:

SELECT * FROM DUAL;
