Another part, I think, is collateral damage. If you mock someone for their height, any innocent bystander who has that attribute in common with the target gets mocked to. Unintentionally, sure, but it still hurts.

I’ve always felt uncomfortable when people start joking or making fun about bad people’s appearance, bodies or other such things. Instead of condemning the act, they end up going “lol fat” or “lol bald.” You’ve put a part of why I find it so disconcerting into words very well.

Wait, is this like a thing that is out?! If so, where is it? I’d love to see more!

This body is mine, even if it sometimes, (maybe more than sometimes) doesn’t feel like it. And though biology might stand against me every day, in some small way I can assert myself over it. The hair may grow back, but I have sharp steel to cut it away, and the will to do so.

There is something about shaving. On one hand, I don’t like it. The effort. The mixed results. The fact that it still feels like a thing only guys do. The quiet background hum of dysphoria even when I only have a bit of stubble.

For those curious, missions on the chopping block include:

MAVEN, studying Mars climate and weather.
New Horizons, famous for flying by Pluto, currently in the Kuiper Belt.
GOLD, launched only in 2018 to study the effects of the sun on Earth’s atmosphere.

Everything here sucks, but “19 active inflight missions canceled” is really a highlight. Scrapping active missions is such a colossal waste of time, money and energy. Not to mention killing off the science those missions would generate.

Plus, think of what this support signals to others. This news has me wondering about the people in my life who like the art. Are they quietly okay with removing my rights, and the rights of people like me?

Engaging with the art (creating fan works, reading used books, etc.) still increases interest in the art. While someone might only read a used copy, and thus try to“wash their hands of it” the person they sit next to on the bus might be inspired by the book and later buy it, or watch the movie.

There’s also the argument about engagement that doesn’t directly support the artist being okay, such as buying one of her books used, but honestly I don’t even think that is separate from the artists actions.

This news has me thinking about the whole “separate art from the artist” topic.

Honestly, I think this is pretty strong evidence that it is impossible to do so. In this case, any engagement with the art that results in the author getting paid directly funds the removal of trans rights.
