One of the things that has pretty annoying is that if you have any kind of bullshit meter, if you have anything inside of yourself that doesn’t enjoy being lied to, the last couple of years of almost every area of public life have been driving you up a fucking wall

so, did I miss much?

It's been a bit over a month at St Vincents' Hospital for fairly major head surgery, and then some rehab time at Sacred Heart - I've been discharged and am home again. Lots of outpatient stuff and a whole lot of medication still to come, of course.

A young Barking Owl mucking around on a branch. The Barkers should start breeding a bit after the Powerful Owls. Hopefully lots of Barker Owlets this year.

Remembering Australia’s worst election jingle. But there’s no opportunity to vote for the perennial WA Family First candidate this time around. Last year Henry landed an 18-month suspended prison sentence for manipulating the share price of his ASX-listed bottled water company

What might our future power grid look like? This illustrated guide explains Our energy system is evolving at breakneck speed. Here we look at how our power grid works, what more renewables mean for energy prices, how nuclear fits into the picture, and how we might build a gri...

Excellent read/explainer on Australia’s energy needs now and into the future. Would be great if politics could stay out of the equation and we just do what’s logical.

I know my brother @swearyanthony.bsky.social has a lot of people he cares about on here. While not everyone knows about the connection, a lot of people who follow me also follow him. This seemed like a way to get the word out:

Anthony is currently in ICU in a critical condition after a head injury.

The problem with most machine-based random number generators is that they’re not TRULY random, so if you need genuine randomness it is sometimes necessary to link your code to an external random process like a physical noise source or the current rate of US tariffs on a given country.

This weekend I learned how to cast bronze inside carved cuttlefish bone.

This ancient metalworking technique has been around since the 6th century BCE (at least!) and produces objects with organic, unique features.

Any weekend you get to play with fire is a good weekend πŸ”₯

I wonder how I might find the (ex(?)) Googler who made the Google Listen app, the company’s first foray into a podcast app from 2009. Would love to interview them and get their spot in podcast history.

Dare I ask for a repost or two?

Just had a sample of the Eaton Fire ash that is in my driveway run on the department XRF. Is there titanium (new house paint)? Yup. Lead (old house paint)? You betcha. Heavy metals? Check. Treat that ash like it's toxic folks (because it is)

As it lies, crashed against the rocks, I will look back on this period of time with a fondness that for a moment, the greedy and scared little rat in so many people's brainwheel snorted speedballs and went nuclear

Wistfulbot, a round robot with banded arms and legs, hands in its pockets and a red and green striped scarf. It's standing on the edge of a stone wharf or quay, with Victorian-style street lights lining the edge and white Christmas lights strung between them, blowing in the wind. Before it is a rough, foam-flecked bay, and in the distance, darkened headlines sparkling with clusters of lights. The sky is dark, streaked with the colours of a fiery sunset. The background is all rendered in soft pastels rather than the sharp lines of Wistfulbot itself.

Christmas special robots! Old favourites, with a festive spin. Here, on a more melancholy note, we see Wistfulbot, who just has some stuff to think about by the sea at Christmas.

You can measure an economy's actual, real life, concrete health by: are people able to do their own weird shit?

Do they have money to survive doing their weird shit? Do they have the free time to do that weird shit?

Fuck the metrics, just look for the dirtbags and artists and musicians and writers

More Australians listen to podcasts than watch free-to-air TV, according to latest government figures.

If you wonder why Australian commercial media is in terminal decline, think about how few of them have invested seriously in podcasting www.acma.gov.au/sites/defaul...

This is one of my first mixed signal ASIC designs that I had made into silicon with #TinyTapeout. That means we can look inside the design!

The top left square block is the saw tooth generator, and the components on the bottom right is the digital to analog converter (DAC).
