Dear teachers of special relativity - please stop telling students that special relativity can't handle acceleration and they have to wait for general relativity for that. ThX

Being the 80th anniversary of the bombing of #Hiroshima, this image is doing the rounds as a flash shadow of a person. However, I suspect this is not what this is, as it is much more distinct than other shadows and doesn't appear to have a history before 10-15 yrs ago. Anyone have details?

And, of course, there was an astronomer royal of Ireland until 1922.

It would be a good thing, but with me living 20,000 km away in New South Wales, it should probably come from Cardiff!

Did anyone get the memo that we should be rethinking the origins of the universe? I seem to have missed it.

I do hope you get a physicist on your pod to explain how the bomb works, rather than just saying "science - too complicated".

The towns in Wales where Churchill was loathed Many in Tonypandy and Llanelli saw Churchill as someone who would use troops against workers

Loving the Yalta episode in @empirepoduk.bsky.social but I have to take issue at your claim of the British love of Churchill. Where I grew up - the Welsh Valleys - he is not a popular figure and is still spoken about negatively (& often with swear words).

Not a huge amount - some bits are similar, but the overarching theme is much broader, including some chemistry, biology and even some philosophy (gulp)!

It means people don't understand the difference between a phase and group velocity of a wave.

Where’s the proof in science? There is none UNDERSTANDING RESEARCH: What do we actually mean by research and how does it help inform our understanding of things? Those people looking for proof to come from any research in science will be sadly ...

At the Multiverse From Home conference, I had a bit of a rant about how science is not about β€œfalsification” (other than in trivial examples) and remembered I wrote about how it had nothing to do with proof either a decade ago.

I am the son of a coal miner who went underground with him as a teenager in the 1980s (both NCB and private pits). He told me he never wanted me or my brother to go into the mines. But there was nothing else then, so here I am, living as a cosmologist in Australia. Am happy I didn't.
