Iโm going to halve my publication output. You should consider slow science, too
If we donโt slow down, the research enterprise is going to crash, argues Adrian Barnett.
Less is more. This aphorism is constantly on my mind. The scientific publication system is under tremendous strain, the last thing it needs is a massive dump of LLM generated/aided papers. If you love science, then show it some love. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Discussions at #AIMOS2025 re: financial conflicts of expert witnesses, reminds me of this editorial from 1882 (!):
โโฆthe saying of a well-known judge that liars might be divided into three classes - liars, great liars, and scientific-witnesses - recommends itself to many.โ

For sure!
I mean that everyone, for years, has agreed that perverse incentive structures drive research integrity issues.
So, itโs no longer a particularly insightful conclusion.
But it remains a real problem. Changing incentives is very hard. So, I like papers that discuss *how* to do it.

I'm a bit weary of talks and papers that end, "So, we need to change the incentive structure." That's not a conclusion, it's a premise! #researchintegrity

I like that @elisabethbik.bsky.social introduced us to the fish with names โe.g., Short Stripe and Beauty Mole. I particularly like that Bearded Zebra prefers to go by "BZ". I can really get behind that tone of pubpeer discourse.

On the left is a glass of clean water labelled โDelicious open access.โ In the middle is a plastic bottle of clean water labelled โDelicious open access, but stupidly costly.โ On the right is a plastic bottle full of putrid water labelled โPredatory open access.โ
Some folks confuse these things โwho think the 'water movement' must be flawed, since bottled water is expensive, and contaminated water is poisonous. Clean water and #openaccess both cost $. We don't really need corporations selling packaged products, but communities funding reservoirs and taps.

A tiny clay model of a goose sits upon a Logi brand webcam. It has a white body, black eyes, one bigger than the other, and an orange beak. The neck is cocked slightly to its right, as if to convey attitude, or perhaps a lively cheerful manner.
My daughter made this clay model, and stuck it on my webcam. So, if weโre chatting, know that Iโm also speaking with a jaunty goose.

Peer reviewers more likely to approve articles that cite their own work
Preprint examines how citations can influence the review process.
A new #Nature story investigates a preprint by #AusHSI Prof @aidybarnett.bsky.social, which has found that peer reviewers are more likely to approve articles that cite their own work. When the reasons for citing are hard to justify, this can make the peer-review process transactional. #peerreview
