John DeMarsico Reminds Us That Baseball Is Cinema John DeMarsico’s direction for the New York Mets reminds us of how cinema translates so well to baseball – and vice versa.

β€ͺFor Cinematic Sense, I wrote a love letter to @johndemarsico.bsky.social and how his and SNY's coverage of the New York Mets reminds us that #baseballiscinema.

SNY director John DeMarsico is making baseball a cinematic experience America’s most historic sport is often slow to change. However, SNY director John DeMarsico and his crew’s new perspective is receiving critical applause. By mixing unusual camera angles and homages to movies, New York Mets broadcasts have become a must-see event. DeMarsico, a former walk-on catcher at NC State, was a film studies major. I still can’t believe I got to hang out with the geniuses who make every Met game (win or lose) the best show on television. One of the guys asked me if β€” after living in LA for 30 years β€” β€œdo you still ever get star struck?” I pointed to Gary Cohen and said β€œYes! Five minutes ago.” What a thrill.

Here’s the thing: Mets games are fun to watch because the team is good, but they’re also fun to watch because they look good and are fun to listen to. It’s incredible overall entertainment in a way that other baseball teams just aren’t doing.

SNY screenshot of a close-up of Clay Holmes on the left side and a behind home plate view of Andrew Benintendi ready in the batter's box on the right during yesterday's White Sox vs Mets broadcast.

SNY screenshot of the White Sox vs Mets game from yesterday that is split into two halves horizontally, with the top half also being split vertically.

The top left frame is a close-up of Luis Robert Jr. ready in the batter's box, the top right is a close-up of Clay Holmes looking towards the catcher, and the bottom half is a full shot showing (from L-R) the home plate umpire, catcher, batter and pitcher from the low camera behind first base.

Just before the pitch was made, this entire shot would drop down to the bottom of of the screen, revealing the traditional behind-the-pitcher shot.

So simple, but SNY makes this look easy.

I'm a Yankees fan that fell in love going to Yankee Stadium (post '76 version), but I've moved away from the area. When I go nowadays, I don't feel any connection at all and YES broadcasts are meh.

These two SNY shots (both within the same half-inning) impressed me more than anything YES has done.

I think it’s probably under-discussed how important the SNY broadcast is to how many new fans the Mets have developed in recent years.
