Difficult to overstate what ICE will become. As a civil rights lawyer, I’m already struggling to find friends & journalists and activists picked up needlessly by ICE & essentially disappeared within the immigration system. It will get worse. We have to get in formation & I need funders to help.

And Republicans and the right have been implementing an insane number of anti-LGBTQA+ bills, initially targeting trans people who are being demonized on a daily basis.

... is, you know, bad. He's correct that these groups didn't declare a state of emergency in the past, but that's presumably because absolutely everyone in the community *knew* it was an emergency. After thirty years of positive movement, warning people of significant backsliding is entirely right.

In 2023, the Human Rights Campaign, the largest gay, lesbian and transgender civil rights group in the country, declared a "state of emergency" for gay men, lesbians and transgender people - the first time in the organization's existence. It had not declared a state of emergency when gay men were jailed for having sex in private, when the AIDS epidemic killed hundreds of thousands of gay men or when we faced a possible constitutional amendment banning marriage equality in 2004. In fact, we found out, this "emergency" was almost entirely in response to new state bills proposing restrictions on medical treatment for minors with gender dysphoria; bathroom and locker room bans; and transgender issues in school curricula and sports.

I mean, not being weird but forcing trans kids to go through puberty for a sex they don't recognize as their own, in defiance of all medical best practices, leaving them less likely to be able to pass (if that's their desire) and requiring more surgery and treatment if they want to later...

... and a consistent amount of anti-gay pressure coming from the MAGA movement and evangelical Christians. Meanwhile, I see absolutely *zero* evidence that the LGBTQA+ community and our organizations have 'radicalized' at all. It's done what it's always done - campaigned for misunderstood people.

Let's just start with a couple of basic things - lesbian and gay men remain the subject of daily hate crimes. In playing computer games in the last week I've heard people using f****t as an insult on a daily basis. A couple of weeks ago someone shouted it at me from a Cybertruck in San Francisco.
