Yesterday, those who teach Intro to Sociology at Florida colleges (as opposed to universities) received a ready-made curriculum from the state and were ordered to teach it.

Yes, you read that correctly. The *state* is enforcing a curriculum on college profs, complete w/ the following restrictions:

Lange hieß es, Soziolog*innen, Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaftler*innen würden am Ende nur noch Taxi fahren können.

Jetzt wissen wir, die Entwertung dieser Fächer hatte oft andere, ideologische Gründe. Wir sind ein zentraler Bestandteil der Erhaltung einer Demokratie.

Amid Trump attacks and weaponized sanctions, Europeans look to rely less on US tech | TechCrunch European governments are looking to move away from U.S. tech and reclaim their digital sovereignty at a time of unpredictability and volatility in the United States.

Why Musk is Culpable in Grok's Undressing Fiasco | TechPolicy.Press Grok’s functionality is not a black box, but the result of specific design decisions made by executives and engineers at xAI, writes Eryk Salvaggio.

Don't blame Grok: We need to move beyond the idea that generative AI models are just data, models & prompts. That frame places AI companies as passive observers of their own products - but they're the sole deciders of how models are optimized & to what goals. From me in @techpolicypress.bsky.social:

The law needs to catch up with technology now - because we can't trust these tech companies to police themselves

Online reaction economies are largely driven by outrage, cringe & paranoia. As #AISlop is optimized to generate engagement, its emerging genres can probably be best distinguished by the ways they prompt specific affects & trigger certain reactions (including pseudo-forensic readings) #Sloptimization

Ronald Reagan narrates a new anti-tariff ad from Canada The new commercial is part of a $75 million ad campaign by Ontario aimed at Republican voters.

Holy shit.

Game 7 between the Jays and the Mariners just ran an pro-free trade ad, targeted to American workers, decrying tariffs.

The twist being that, if you don't catch it beforehand, Ronald Reagan is revealed as the speaker in the closing seconds.

What PAC is this? The Province of Ontario.

We did the math on AI’s energy footprint. Here’s the story you haven’t heard. The emissions from individual AI text, image, and video queries seem small—until you add up what the industry isn’t tracking and consider where it’s heading next.

Generating a 5 second video is the energy equivalent of running a microwave for an HOUR

A key question for the AI industry will be whether energy consumers see data centres as just infrastructure for their digital lives or an unnecessary indulgence for new AI
