To date, the most "horror"-like games I've ever played are BioShock and Limbo. It's not a lack of wanting the horror. It's the lack of funds to purchase many controllers. So no, I don't get to play horror games.

Anyway, at this juncture I was so scared that I jerked and threw the controller across the room, breaking it.

I have done that several more times with some different games.

Thirst, Get Out, and Vivarium are all well fed by class issues. And of course, there's a lot of overlap here, because a lot of those elements of our experience in a society are tied in knots around each other—and plenty I didn't mention because I don't want this to be a list of movies.

But further, it often addresses the inadequacies and inherent violence of certain modern things. Movies like Midsommar, The Witch, and #Hagazussa: A Heathen's Curse delve into issues with gender roles and gender violence. Any of the Candyman movies or The Wailing deal with structural racism.

Folk horror speaks to what happens when people forget the old ways—not just the rituals or the superstitions, but the survival knowledge of elders and ancestors. It’s the haunting that fills the gap when tradition is severed from memory.

Jane Doe's Body ( #janedoesbody ) twins up violence against women, particularly in religious contexts. The Haunting of Hill House series is about generational trauma, AND I COULD KEEP GOING. #hauntingofhillhouse

The #Babadook was famous for this as a story of grief; The #Blackcoat's Daughter can be an analogy for the emptiness of depression, and #Hereditary about the ways that mental illness can follow bloodlines due to action and inaction.

Furthermore, in horror as analogy or social commentary, often the villain isn’t the villain. Supernatural horror is often a direct analogy to suffering experienced by a group of people.
