Update to IRCC funding cuts: Affected programs and new funding opportunitiesΒ - Collingwood Neighbourhood House
Affected programs and new funding opportunities.
We continue to seek other funding sources to integrate into affected programs at CNH, and we are working with other organizations to challenge the lack of settlement supports with federal parties.

We are grateful for this support, but we recognize that there continues to be a gap. In addition to some funding sources being temporary, a handful of services remain closed as of March 31, 2025. This includes employment services, multi-lingual support, and higher-level language instruction classes.

In addition, we continue to receive ongoing funding from the provincial government, which provides one settlement worker and restorative circles.

Within the last two months, we have received assistance from an endowment fund to support youth settlement programs until March 31, 2026. We have also received a subcontract with @mosaicbc.bsky.social to support lower-level language instruction classes until the end of December 2025.

Thanks to the generous support from community partners, Collingwood Neighbourhood House (CNH) is pleased to announce that some settlement programs impacted by federal budget cuts will remain open, either temporarily or on an ongoing basis.

Like many organizations, CNH was surprised by IRCC funding cuts at the end of 2024, only three months before taking effect on April 1, without any transitional planning. CNH lost 100% of funding after providing settlement services for 40 years in a part of Vancouver that many newcomers call home.

We also called on #RachelBendayan, the new minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), as part of a group impacted by federal cuts to settlement services at the end of this month.

MP Jenny Kwan implies that the federal government failed to consider the impact of decreased immigration onto the Canadian GDP and less choices for domestic students as universities close departments.
She emphasizes how policy blame cast on immigrants have led to hate towards ethnic minorities.

βItβs a Crisisβ: Cuts Hit Immigrant Settlement Support | The Tyee
As of March 31, services for newcomers, including children and youth, will be slashed in BC.
Earlier this year, we announced that federal funding for settlement programs at CNH would be fully cut by March 31, 2025.
These cuts affect services for newcomers across Canada. At CNH, this impacts several programs, 20 staff and countless participants.
