Shout-out to my old D&D group for the GM I am today. Running six hours of 5e that I thought I would be a player in until I was literally driving to the game made me incredibly good at improv.

I'm definitely with Phil on "established characters are patrons." In fact, that's built into The One Ring, with the PCs having one or more of the various established characters as a patron, and the group getting slightly different benefits depending on which patron they are working with.
