Anna Fryxelius, a woman in a wheelchair is smiling and pointing enthusiastically at a scientific poster behind her. The poster, titled βStructured patient involvement in Rheumatoid Arthritis research,β is presented by the Norwegian Rheumatism Association (Norsk Revmatikerforbund) at the EULAR Congress. It highlights the top 10 unanswered research questions in rheumatoid arthritis and describes a James Lind Alliance priority-setting process. The woman is wearing a black suit and conference badge, and the setting is a professional blue-carpeted conference hall.

17.05.2025 10:36 β π 3 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0π Inside Brigant Lab : The chondrocytes cells π Have you ever wondered how aging cells contribute to joint damage? Letβs dive into the science together! π§ π‘ Meet the chondrocytes, the architects of cartilage health, maintaining its structure and function. But in osteoarthritis (OA), their balance is disrupted. These cells start contributing to cartilage breakdown, driving joint degeneration. As they age, chondrocytes lose their ability to repair cartilage and produce proteins that accelerate its destructionβworsening joint damage and fueling the progression of OA. Understanding their role is key to unlocking new treatments. π§¬π¦΄β¨ Image: Chondrocyte cells in 2D culture Want to know more? π Welcome to InsideBrigantLab! π In this series, weβll take you behind the scenes of our labβs journey to advance diagnostics and develop innovative treatments for rheumatologic diseases.π¬ππ Our first feature focuses on Osteoarthritis (OA), the most common form of arthritisβa condition that wears down joint cartilage over time. Think of cartilage as the cushion between your joints. In OA, that cushion wears thin, leading to pain and stiffness. OA affects millions worldwide and significantly reduces quality of life. π¦΄βΏ Did you know that by 2050, 1 in 3 people may be living with OA? Understanding its symptoms, prevalence, and the current limitations in treatments is crucial for driving innovative research. π‘ While prevention strategies exist, effective disease-modifying treatments remain a significant unmet needβand this is where our work comes in. At BrigantLab, weβre diving deep into the molecular mechanisms of OA, with a special focus on the role of chondrocytes and connective tissues.π§¬π©Ί Stay tuned for more #InsideBrigantLab posts, where weβll share insights into our work, the impact we strive to create, and an exclusive preview of whatβs next in our scientific journey. π May is Arthritis Awareness Month! π Arthritis Awareness Month is a global initiative to raise awareness about the impact of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs), which affect millions of lives worldwide. π At Brigantlab, weβre shining a light on osteoarthritis (OA)βa common form of arthritis that impacts joints like the knees, hips, and hands. For those living with OA, chronic pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility are daily challenges.π¦΅π€² For over 500 million people, OA means chronic pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility, but together, we can make a difference. π₯ π¬ Our research dives deep into how chondrocytes (the cells in cartilage) respond under pathological conditions. With every discovery, weβre closer to better diagnosis, treatments, and hope for those affected.𧬠Letβs remember: β OA doesnβt discriminateβit can affect anyone, at any age. β Itβs life-changing, but through awareness and innovation, we can fight back. β Research is the key to unlocking a better future. Join us this month to raise awareness and support advancements in arthritis research. Together, we can take steps toward a pain-free future! π₯πβ¨ #arthritisawarenessmonth #supportarthritis #EULAR #eularadvocacy #osteoarthritis #osteoarthritsawareness #chondrocyteresearch #scienceforchange #research #brigantlab

02.05.2025 19:01 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0π¨ Exciting Research Update! π¨ Weβre thrilled to announce the publication of an important and exciting study in Non-Coding RNA Research where BrigantLab was part ! π We reveal a strong link between uremic toxin levels and the microRNA miR-223 in chronic kidney disease (CKD)-associated anemia. We demonstrated that the uremic toxin indoxyl sulfate (IS) increases miR-223 expression in both human erythroid cell lines and primary cells. In a cohort of over 500 CKD patients, serum miR-223 levels correlated with IS and other uremic toxins, as well as with markers of endothelial dysfunction and anemia severity. 𧬠Why is this important? These findings position miR-223 as a promising biomarker for monitoring CKD-related anemia and vascular complicationsβopening the door to more personalized and non-invasive diagnostic strategies. π‘ A huge congratulations to Laurent Metzinger for spearheading this important work, and to all the incredible co-authors: Emma Brisot, Pierre-Marie LeprΓͺtre, Eya Hamza, PhD, MBA, Ophelie Fourdinier, Hakim Ouled-Haddou, Gabriel Choukroun, Ziad Massy, Francis Verbeke, ValΓ©rie Metzinger-Le Meuth, and Griet Glorieux! β¨ π Read the full article here: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ncrna.2025.04.009 [or link in bio] π Stay tuned for more updates from BrigantLab ! π #ckd #chronickidneydisease #chronickidneydiseaseawareness #anemia #BiomarkerDiscovery #mir223 #uremictoxins #nephrology #Research #Researchpapers #science #lablife #brigantlab
