Barbies creator, Ruth Handler, kinda maybe sorta stole the whole idea from the popular European doll, Bild Lilli. Lilli was a popular bachelor gift, like a dancing hula girl. Women and girls did really like her as well, though. Lilli is a character from a comic strip in the old newspaper Bild.
