Assad's prisons held 136,000 people and were key to crushing dissent and peaceful protests. They were known for their brutal torture, industrial scale killings, systematic rape, and organ trafficking.

There’s much that is unknown about the impact of Assad’s collapse. But one point is irrefutable: Iran’s regional strategic construct has crumbled. Between what has happened to Hezbollah, Hamas, and now Assad, the multiple proxy structure is but a bloody memory.

I was in Syria just before the war. I met these wonderful school kids in Palmyra. I have thought of them often over the years. As things seem to be shifting in Syria, I wonder where they are and what their futures hold.

I was heard at 45, when I wasn’t in my 20s. But nothing was done. And I left a job I loved because the solution offered was for me “not to be in meetings alone with that colleague”. As a woman of a certain age, I was absolutely clear why I left.

Like so many, I have stories of harassment and even violence at work. The difference of how 25 year old me vs 45 year old me dealt with it is about the cumulative effect of experience and finally feeling I was in a position of enough seniority I would be heard.
