I set the table early this morning in preparation for the end of a busy day. Husband will have our dinner ready including fresh GF challah. Simple, grounding routines when the world is unpredictable, times are difficult.

At a fabulous women’s health conference today in Ottawa with keynote speaker @drjengunter.bsky.social — she’s awesome, pushing back against all the misinformation on perimenopause and menopause. Women being marketed so much garbage about our health isn’t new, but social media sure makes it worse.

If the groundhog is buried under snow and cannot emerg to see his shadow, does that mean spring is six weeks away?

Last night friends said that they rarely feel safe enough to wear anything that gives away their Jewish identity, in public or at work. In 2026, Holocaust Remembrance Day—a mere 81 years since Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated—we assert, “Never Again,” but we are less and less safe as Jews worldwide.

Cannot believe our daughter is 17 today. She’s the most wonderful, smart, kind, strong woman.

I was honoured to join B’nai Brith this morning for a press conference on Parliament Hill. The focus was on the rise of hate crimes targeting Jews, B’nai Brith calling for a Royal Comission into antisemitism in Canada and calling for the appointment of a new Special Envoy combatting antisemitism.

A patient in her 90s told me that she’s seen political regimes come and go. She’s seen humanity take steps forward and backward. She’s very concerned about the USA, and the world, but she is nevertheless holding onto hope for the future.

Let’s start with a weekend of safety, calm. Shabbat shalom.

What is happening in the USA didn’t occur in a vacuum. ICE isn’t an anomaly.

There is no bubble of privilege, no geopolitical corner that is safe when authoritarian regimes murder their own citizens and invade other nations.

As we would all know if we’ve ever learned anything from world history.

The world being “governed by force” is a plan that only a narcissistic delusional megalomaniac and his sycophants would think is a good idea.

In happier news, it is our 27th wedding anniversary today. Jan 3, 1999, we braved the Toronto snowstorm of the century.

Canadians are waking up this morning with our elbows up, in response to the invasion of Venezuela. Our own patriotism won’t safeguard us from US authoritarianism. Looking to Prime Minister Carney’s response. Thankful he has forged strong ties to the UK and Europe.

So long, 2025. Tested the limits of our personal and global resilience in myriad ways. Not a year that many of us will look back on fondly.

According to @who.int, 20 million children missed out on essential vaccines in 2024 due to conflict, supply disruptions, and a rise in vaccine misinformation. 2025 funding cuts severely disrupted global maternal care, vaccination, HIV prevention, and disease surveillance. Let’s do better in 2026.

It is all done virtually, as we are around the world. I’ll be working full-time in Ottawa at the same time as doing the program.

Sixth night of Chanukah. Difficult week for many reasons, for us, our friends and family, colleagues, and many people. Tonight we will light our candles and we will ground ourselves in the moment, in our space of calm and safety. Wishing the same for everyone else. Shabbat shalom.

Tragically, 3 paediatric deaths in our city (Ottawa) because of flu so far this season.

Please get your flu shot. Everyone 6 months + is eligible and encouraged to do so.

Doesn’t matter whether it is a perfect match - it is helpful to reduce seriousness of illness.
