I worked at DHS. I’ve seen the job done with integrity. This? It’s cruelty as content — posted by the official DHS account. This administration is out of control, and it’s going to take years to undo the damage they’ve done to the mission, the agency, and the people we serve.

Take this with a grain of salt since I worked at DHS, but yeah—I&A had its public L’s, no doubt. But behind the scenes, it filled critical gaps no one else would. Killing it now, in this threat environment, isn’t bold. It’s reckless.

These dismantled safeguards would’ve once flagged concerns over conditions, medical neglect, and abuse. Now, there’s no meaningful federal accountability, especially when these camps operate under a blanket and frankly b/s “state of emergency.”

Trump and Noem got rid of Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties at DHS, which was supposed to investigate abuses in detention settings, has been gutted. The Office of the Immigration Detention Ombudsman — created by Congress as an independent watchdog — has been defunded and sidelined.

These morons are going to get people killed. They are asking for a detention standards waiver, that get this was established during Trump 1.0. Meaning, they don’t / can’t adhere to those standards. Half of all ICE deaths in custody this year have happened in Florida.

There is a federal law specifically forbidding DHS from spending any money to prevent a member of Congress from inspecting an immigration detention facility, explicitly including if unannounced.

Not to mention geopolitically, what was happening during this same time period: China held major war games around Taiwan. Russian election and Ukraine war. Israel-Hamas. Haitian PM resignation. Mass migration. Moscow concert hall attack, and those are the things that are just in the public sphere.
