"The ABCs of Preventive Cardiology" Speaker: Dr. Sandra Tsai, MD, MPH Clinical Associate Professor Primary Care and Population Health Stanford University School of Medicine About the Speaker: Dr. Tsai earned her medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and her Master's degree in Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley. She completed a residency in internal medicine at University of Texas Southwestern and a post-doctoral fellowship in cardiovascular disease prevention at the Stanford Prevention Research Center. Today she practices out of several clinics for Stanford Health Care. They include Preventive Cardiology, Women's Heart Health, The Hypertension Center and Primary Care and Population Health Clinics at Stanford. Her specialties include cardiometabolic diseases, such as pre-diabetes and diabetes, hypertension, lipid disorders and weight management.

Kiera also functions as the Program Management Office (PMO) Lead, providing oversight and guidance to SHC Tri-Valley as they expand the research enterprise in the East Bay. Kiera has over 10 years of research experience and has worked at Stanford for the last 7 years, previously working as a pediatric cardiac intensive care nurse. Leonard Basobas, MS, is currently the Director of Growth & Development for the Emergency Medicine-Clinical Research Unit (EM-CRU) at Stanford University. He has over 20 years of experience in the field of Clinical Research, he was a Sr. Research Manager at Stanford Center for Clinical Research (SCCR), and a Study Lead, Sr. Project Manager at various academic institutions, Contract Research Organizations (CROs), large health care systems, and in the private sector. In this SCCR Science Series session, Elaine Costa, MD, a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Otolaryngology, Head, and Neck Surgery (OHNS) provides an overview of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Here, she covers how to: 1. Identify and describe the clinical features and diagnostic criteria of OSA 2. Understand the various diagnostic tools and methods used to diagnose OSA 3. Recognize the pathophysiology and key risk factors associated with OSA 4. Assess the long-term cardiovascular risks associated with OSA 5. Evaluate the range of treatment options available for OSA About the Instructor: Dr. Elaine Costa is a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University School of Medicine in the Department of Otolaryngology. Her current research focuses on Obstructive Sleep Apnea, from diagnosis to evaluation of clinical outcomes post-surgical intervention. She earned her medical doctorate at Universidade Federal de Pernambuco and holds a master's degree in sciences from Universidade Estadual de Campinas, where she also specialized in otolaryngology. Dr. Costa has foundational research experience from Brunel University London and has honed her clinical research, project management, analytical skills and leadership in academia during her trainings over the last 12 years.

Clinical Scholar in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine at Stanford, Andrew Moore, MD, provides a foundation in medical terminology and common medical acronyms. In this session, he discusses the typical components of medical terms as well as the important anatomic landmarks, which in combination can be used to interpret the majority of medical terminology. Topics include: β’ Key roots, prefixes, and suffixes for medical terms β’ Important anatomic terminology β’ Importance of acronyms in medical practice β’ When the use of medical acronyms is appropriate and when it should be avoided β’ Common medical acronyms, abbreviations, and colloquialisms β’ Resources to improve health literacy Andrew Moore, MD, is a pulmonary and critical care medicine instructor at Stanford. He grew up in Virginia and completed his Bachelorβs in Neuroscience at the College of William and Mary followed by his MD at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and his residency and chief residency here at Stanford. He works clinically in the intensive care unit (ICU) and his research focuses on the use of bioinformatics to develop better diagnostic and prognostic tools in the ICU.
