I mean, I still love the game. MERP was my first exposure to role playing games and the range of results that the tables presented was also a way for a RPG n00b to realize the scope of the possibility space the medium offered.

My favourite part of MERP was the fear tables, which meant that if you failed you could die of a heart attack when meeting a Balrog.

Rolemaster is the best example of a generation of RPGs whose defining characteristic was hating the players. Going through 4 tables and 3 rolls only to learn that you casually stabbed yourself in the eye (and in the game!).

Somehow, deep down I knew it was Rolemaster even before reading the article.

This is obviously not about AI, but to root out anyone not submissive enough to be blindly compliant.

Are they only door related?

To just use the chat bot format the user would need a high level of expertise with the software to know what the software is and isn't capable of doing. And for a power user like this a chat bot pattern is a clumsier and slower way to interact than using shortcuts.

There are many issues with this notion (and with the technology itself), but one unexplored aspect (at least to my knowledge) is that in most cases the role of the UI is not just to let people do things, but also to communicate what is possible within the experience.

One of the big hopes for genAI and the chat bot format was to bypass the UI and just tell the software what to do using natural language.

A sign of a good leader is if people under them can guess what their decisions might be. Meaning that people clearly understand their goals, intentions, and mental model. It is about clarity and alignment.
