Piecework is how a woman working 12 hour shifts, six days a week, only earns $300. Workers should be paid for their time.

I spent a summer in college (1982) in a clothing factory, sewing welt pockets into suit jackets. The minimum wage at the time was $3.30 and I made $5.00 in the ILGWU shop. Welt pockets are complicated and I didn’t do many more than 5 an hour. These piecework rates would be criminal even then.

also this should be not legal. the same as how farm workers shouldn't be paid per container. minimum wage is minimum wage for a reason. it should be the minimum earnings needed to live comfortably.

The system described (piecework) is how garment workers living in tenements on the Lower East Side got paid before effective unionization. This is bullshit.

I interviewed one of these factory workers in Los Angeles. She gets paid three cents to sew a zipper, five cents for a collar, and seven cents to prepare the top part of a skirt.
