Unlocking citizen energy can cut system costs, stabilise prices & boost resilience. Already 9,000 communities exist across EU, but studies show up to 83% of households (≈187m) could join. Bottlenecks: weak transposition, grid limits, missing frameworks. 2/4

EP/Council should reflect on the use of delegated powers + assert their legislative role in safeguarding the EU's sustainability framework. 4/

📉 This judgement allows the COM to bypass lifecycle analysis, disregard upstream/downstream impacts + ignore scientific experts and civil society.

Today’s GC ruling on the Taxonomy sets a dangerous precedent.

By upholding the COM's inclusion of nuclear + fossil gas as “sustainable” under the EU Taxonomy, the GC weakened EU's sustainable finance framework and opened the door to political manoeuvring via delegated acts. 1/5

Last Friday, EREF submitted its contribution to the COM’s consultation on the European Grids Package. Across Europe, grid connection delays, insufficient capacity, and slow permitting have become one of the main bottlenecks to renewable energy deployment. 1/5

While EREF supports the introduction of non-price criteria in procurement and auction design to ensure resilience, EU content and cybersecurity elements, we believe the application of these criteria must be transparent, harmonised, and not overburden smaller actors. (6/7)

The IDAA should also fully operationalise the principles of overriding public interest, acceleration areas, and one-stop-shop procedures, as well as clearly prioritize renewable energy-based inputs. (5/7)

These include:
🔹Fast-tracked permitting for renewables/infrastructure
🔹 Prioritisation of renewable-based energy inputs
🔹 Accessible funding and permitting for SMEs and
energy communities
🔹 Support for demand-side measures and clean
product markets (4/7)

EREF would like to highlight that the IDAA should focus on renewable energy, ensures access for smaller and mid-sized actors, and avoid lock-in to legacy technologies. In addition, this instrument must address the core obstacles to industrial decarbonisation. (3/7)

EREF welcomes the European Commission’s initiative to develop an IDAA as part of the Clean Industrial Deal, complementing the implementation of initiatives like the Net Zero Industry Act and the revised Renewable Energy Directive. (2/7)
