ZOE's @lukasbe.bsky.social on the pros and cons of #MadeinEU 👇
These tools carry both “big potential and big risks” and should be “targeted”.
If properly done, buy-EU clauses could “support local jobs” in sectors like battery production, green steel, or electric vehicles.

In our new opinion piece for @table.media we set out how the EU’s #simplification agenda risks costing a huge amount of political capital – all for little return.

Thanks, interesting! I wonder whether the combination of having to 1) submit (probably very comprehensive?) plans 2) find a partner country for joint procurement 3) buy European, will be too deterrent for MS to access loans (would be different for grants of course). Is that too pessimistic?

@table.media published our OpEd on how to support energy-intensive industry in Europe while avoiding inefficient subsidy races.
@ph-jaeg.bsky.social has a nice and short summary in his thread. ⬇️

With the CID & Energy Action Plan, the EU wants to support energy intensive industries.
Support is needed - but it's crucial that any national subsidies to lower electricity prices don't result in inefficient distortions that end up harming competitiveness and climate.

Of course, this is a long-term endeavour + politically very sensitive and should therefore be coordinated at EU level (see for example this proposal zoe-institut.de/wp-content/u...)

Developing energy-intensive industries in these regions can be a win-win because 1) can be macroeconomically efficient (www.nature.com/articles/s41...) and 2) generates jobs, technological upgrading,...

‘Building back better’: a promise fulfilled?
Three years on, the lesson of the EU’s post-pandemic recovery fund is that building economic resilience is a long-term endeavour.
The lesson of the 🇪🇺 post-pandemic recovery fund is that building economic resilience is possible, but it is a long-term endeavour. Interesting analysis and article by @lukasbe.bsky.social & Lydia Korinek
