Earlier today, I learned about the unlivable conditions inside an apartment complex that was the recent target of an ICE raid in September.

Some of the remaining residents, who are Black, shared that the conditions were inhumane long before the September raid.

Today, after months of requests, I toured the Broadview ICE Processing Facility. I want to share what I saw.

The facility has no food vendor, no medical care, and detainees have to use toilets in the middle of shared cells. These are in no way suitable conditions to be holding anyone — period.

Twitter accounts are based in Russia. BlueSky accounts are based in homes with, frankly, too many books, plants, obsolete cables, and pieces of rustic pottery, that could do with a bit of a tidying up, to be honest.

I am really losing patience with Americans who treat their elected officials like celebrities they have to defend, instead of representatives they have to hold responsible. Grow the fuck up. Millions of lives are at stake.

A few days ago I shared a video of Mercedes Wells, a black woman in labour who had been kicked out of the hospital & gave birth roadside.

The doctor and nurse who kicked her out have been fired.

Black women have the highest maternal mortality in the country, and misogynoir plays a big role.

The Professor and the Pedophile | Opinion | The Harvard Crimson Summers should choose the most straightforward path and resign. Should he refuse to, though, the University must cut ties with its former president to the greatest extent possible.

"By any consistent standard, if Summers is unfit to work for each of these institutions [from which he resigned], he is equally unfit to teach at our school. Harvard should not be the only institution in America where Summers remains above reproach."

• The claim "vaccines do not cause autism" is not an evidence-based claim because studies have not ruled out the possibility that infant vaccines cause autism.
• Studies supporting a link have been ignored by health authorities.
• HHS has launched a comprehensive assessment of the causes of autism,
including investigations on plausible biologic mechanisms and potential causal links.

The U.S. government is now inarguably spreading medical disinformation that is going to kill babies preferentially.

Period.

This is an INTOLERABLE. UNPRECEDENTED. DANGEROUS. ATTACK. ON ALL OF US.

I really hate it when scientists keep saying that “we need to rebuild trust in science,” because it implies that scientists are to blame for the mistrust rather than the millions of dollars of dark money that have funded political attacks on science in order to advance a far right agenda.

Abundance and the Left Ezra Klein talks with Bhaskar Sunkara about Abundance, Zohran Mamdani’s victory, and why progressives need a state that works at the speed of their ambitions.

"maybe government should work better" is not an original, interesting, or particularly useful argument, much less any serious ideology

Pastors speak of brutality of arrests at hands of local cops at Broadview ICE facility Pastor Luke Harris-Ferree and the Rev. Michael Woolf were arrested Friday while trying to meet and pray with detainees. They call on Gov. JB Pritzker to answer for the excessive use of force by police...

Broadview's mayor said “out-of-towners” had “chosen their fists" but video shows calm before cops grab Rev Michael Woolf from the crowd.

“If they were willing to do that to clergy in broad daylight ... I can’t even imagine what they’re doing to our immigrant neighbors," said Rev Luke Harris-Ferree.

The New York Times obit for Alice Wong doesn’t mention Covid or Gaza

It ignores two of her biggest causes because of political bias

Alice fought tirelessly for Covid mitigations

She fought for the people of Gaza

She rightfully reminded us that the genocide in Gaza is a disability justice issue

Why is Mainstream Media Ignoring Overtly Racist Attacks on Mamdani from Congressional Republicans? Non-stop Islamopbohic vitriol, threats of deportation, and virtually no coverage from CNN, NBC, CBS, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal or The Washington Post.

Congressional republicans have been spewing racist attacks on Mamdani for weeks and it’s almost never mentioned in our media. Not only that, the person leading the hate campaign—Randy Fine—is treated by the same media as a good faith expert on antisemitism. I wrote about this obscene double standard

arghavansallesmd: Alice Wong was, among other things, a force of nature, a writer, an activist, a MacArthur genius grant recipient, and a fierce warrior for disability justice. She spent much of the last few years advocating for masks and raising awareness of Long Covid. She also co-founded eSims for Gaza, which has raised over $3 million so far to help people in Gaza communicate with the outside world. But you won't read about that in most of the obituaries about her.
I'm sharing here some of her tweets about why masking was so important to her and how hard she had to fight, even in the hospital, to get people around her to mask.
Those tweets are from a hospitalization in January
2024. Ever since her tracheostomy, she could no longer protect herself from respiratory infections. Like many people, she depended on her community to keep her safe. According to her family, she passed away Friday from an infection.
Aside from her work on Covid and eSims, she was best known for the Disability Visibility Project and her books, Disability Visibility, Disability Intimacy, the in-progress Disability Vulnerability, and her memoir, Year of the Tiger. She had a column at Teen Vogue on disability visibility, and she also voiced a character on Netflix that was based on her. Alice did what so many of us aspire to do-she left the world a better place than when she entered it.
I never had the honor of meeting Alice. Like millions of other people, I followed and was inspired by her work. I hope you'll read these slides as a tribute to her and her efforts to build community. I hope you'll wear a mask in public spaces. I hope we'll care for ourselves and those around us the way Alice would have wanted us to. Her GoFundMe remains active and will go toward continuing her work, if anyone would like to contribute.

Alice Wong was one of the few who actually left the world better than when she entered it. A lot of the obituaries are leaving out her work on Covid, her advocacy around masking, and her work on eSims for Gaza. I tried to capture some of that in a post on IG.

When ICE came for Jeremy, Syracuse’s underground railroad helped him escape the country Friends and family helped a well-known Syracuse man elude detention and flee to France

I cried while reading this front-page article this morning in my local newspaper.
Tears for a broken family and all broken families.
Hopeful tears for a community of angels supporting one another.

If women are underrepresented in STEM, it's at least partly because men like this offer mentoring, then embarrass themselves by assuming their mentees must be into them, then decide the best solution is to cut ties, which sends the signal to other faculty that the mentee must not be good enough.

Retired journalists raise the alarm about state sponsored terror in Chicago "It is without precedent that the biggest names in Chicago journalism have come together to condemn a public action"

I'm so proud of local Chicago journalists & their fearless coverage of the ICE/CBP terror campaign. Now retired broadcast journalists are also playing a role with a powerful new letter to the people of our city. I talked to Phil Ponce, who led this effort.
