I literally learned this an hour ago. As well as his links to Bitcoin. Wtf? MFer literally created every evil in the 21st century?

That’s especially true for tech that affects labor and capital (like crypto and AI)

Doesn’t help that the industry’s politics flipped very overtly. But Thiel (and now Epstein???) involvement in the industry suggests that Big Tech was always intended to be a political project.

Was going to say this. But honestly AI polarization is just an extension of the broader tech backlash that happened post Cambridge Analytica and accelerated during COVID and again during NFT + FTX collapse. Technology is never neural; arguably fits into Karl Polanyi’s double movement.

What makes this weird is the history of liberalism has been about expanding the circle of inclusion and resisting oppression.

Views of liberalism grounded in norms or in self-interest alone don’t appreciate that liberalism’s most defining moments involve defending the good even when it’s unpopular.

For this admin constraint is β€œweak.” Power is being able to β€œdominate” by eschewing norms.

Unironically, thank god they have no understanding of what power is and how to maintain it. They literally are little bullies stuck in grade school whose only objective is lashing out to fill a void.

Agree with your frustration, though. A lot of analysis, esp. online seems to boil down to β€œKamala didn't address my pet issue, but if she did, she would have won.” But given the circumstances of her nomination and the low approval of Biden those are clearly primary.

I think a charitable view of the Cheney complaint is there are other places she could have spent her energy that would have mattered more. At least over courting republican old guard. I don't have strong opinions on that, but I think that's a β€œgood faith” version of it.

It’s always a good time to use the full extent of the law to prosecute illiberal, bad faith actors who break the law. Hopefully we can all push the performative liberals in congress to remember that liberalism is at its best when it stands for something and enforces standards.

What saddens me is it didn’t have to be this way. The internet, like all technology, exists as a series of governance choices. At each stage of its existence decisions were made about how to maintain and extend its function. At some point we just started deferring to Big Tech for those choices.

Greed is not selfishness It’s actually something far more dangerous.

Chrematistics or accumulation without limit was the most important concept I ever learned about. It's not #greed per se, it's something much worse and it dominates our world. #capitalism #philosophy #misalignedmarkets #poliecon

Policies like the immigration enforcement we’ve been pursuing over the past decade only result in performative cruelty. In an attempt to show people something is being done enforcement escalates into extremes. Trump is not a break from that, but one logical conclusion.

Reflecting on one year of Misaligned Markets! Misaligned Markets turns one year old. I reflect on the year and what comes next.

Capitalist Serialization: property rights, financial entitlements, liabilities are all lossy abstractions that only loosely map onto the real world. This creates a gap between what something represents and what it is, creating metaphorical arbitrage opportunities.

The four paradoxes of capitalism: As markets mature and property rights become more complex, they create greater affordances for capturing value and influencing enforcement. This makes capitalism metastable and compatible with any number of regimes.

I learned a lot through blogging last year, as writing is a form of reflection. In this blog post I speedrun some of the more interesting topics I discussed. Mainly two ideas that illustrate capitalism creates "attack surfaces" in markets.

The more I see from this admin the more I'm convinced that good fathers can prevent fascism. It's an ideology that can be described via personal psychology rather than any coherent commitment to... anything. Little boys taking the state for a joyride to feel something.

Capitalism runs like a computer (and it's being hacked) Like computer networks, market capitalism rewards actors that exploit gaps created by system and user behavior.

This very much resembles spoofing within computer systems. I was a cybersecurity marketer who studied economics. The more I learned about network abuse, the more I realized how different types of hacks map to market failure in capitalist systems. misaligned.markets/capitalism-a...

It's not just about concentration. Capitalism's weird in that markets reward exploiting asymmetries in metrics/representations. Underpricing climate change is profitable, untethering homeowner quality from CDOs was profitable. The system deliberately seeks misrepresentation

LLM β€œintelligence” is a dark pattern LLMs leverage scaffolding and user psychology to appear as slabs of raw intelligence in service of a costly illusion.

I feel is the reason we’re in a bubble is because they’ve been using scale to pretend individual models are becoming more capable and thus more β€œhuman.”

The argument against ICE isn't an especially difficult one to make politically in this moment. The issue is that people who substantively disagree with abolishing ICE prefer having a proxy fight about strategy to discussing that stance. Many such cases.
