Their cease-and-desist letter sought to prohibit the target from discussing the matter, even “in private.”

Italian fuel company Fox Petroli is threatening two environmental defenders for calling its Pesaro site "degraded” – language reflecting that of the company's own report.

The multi-million company is demanding the defenders pay €2 million for “reputational damage.”

🔴 Global press freedom hits 50-year low.

A new report from @internationalidea.bsky.social shows press freedom has declined in a quarter of the 174 countries studied.

Strong anti-SLAPP laws are needed in addition to other protections to reverse this trend.

Last year the EU agreed a law to #StopSLAPPs and July 2nd marked its first big test.

@greenpeace.org took US oil giant Energy Transfer to court in the Netherlands, challenging an absurd lawsuit meant to punish their solidarity with Indigenous-led protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline.

On July 2nd, over 50 organisations in 17 countries participated in a European Day of Action against SLAPPs, calling on governments to protect us from oligarchs, tech bros and all those weaponising the law to silence those speaking out in the public good.

The action also showed solidarity with @greenpeace.org, which on the same day initiated its trial against US oil giant Energy Transfer in a Dutch court, in the first major test case of Europe’s new anti-SLAPP law.

📣 Activists and organisations called on governments to pass strong anti-SLAPP laws.

For EU countries, that means turning the new EU directive into national law - ideally, in a timely and ambitious manner. ⚖️

They’re abusive lawsuits used by the powerful to silence journalists, activists & NGOs.

We’re pushing back.

With support from CASE, the first European Day of Action Against SLAPPs took place on 2 July.
