Everyone -- from the German generals to Chamberlain -- assumed he was a temporary thing and if they played nice and rode it out, things would go back to normal.

we all know that the proof for the administration that an institution is not implementing affirmative action will be the percentage of nonwhite admits. the lower the better. any more than a smattering of black and Hispanic students will be evidence of illegal discrimination (against whites)

Every reputable expert I know considers mRNA vaccine technology to be one of the most revolutionary advances in medicine in our lifetimes. Its inventors won the Nobel Prize in 2023. Shutting it down now is pointless self-harm to humanity.

I believe one of the new mRNA vaccines was expected to treat colon cancer, and another had the potential to keep pancreatic cancer from recurring. That’s what they’re taking away.

If we emerge with a non-fascist society, each and every university administrator who Chamberlained or Vichied to any degree must be ruthlessly expelled from any position of responsibility or influence. Let their name be stricken from every tablet. They shouldn’t run a hot-dog stand.

Are you going to create a permanent site in the Edmonton area during the collection campaign? It would be useful to have a spot so people don't have to hunt around the City on any given day.

Trump get RIPPED TO SHREDS on Tariffs by APPEALS COURT
YouTube video by MeidasTouch Trump get RIPPED TO SHREDS on Tariffs by APPEALS COURT

Michael Popok predicts an 11 judge panel at the Court of Appeals is about to strike down all of Trump's tariffs.
It doesn't really matter since the Supreme Court is corrupt, I expect they will overrule the Appeals Court.
Politicized judicial systems don't work, IMO.

My argument isn't that others couldn't do worse, but that there's no point in engaging - let alone making concessions - with a fascist brainfart who has no honor and will do what he wants regardless. Carney needs to assert sovereignty and massively shift us away from the US, yesterday.

By far Gene Roddenberry's most outlandish idea about the future was that workplaces would be essentially frictionless meritocracies where upper management is both totally competent and humbly willing to accept feedback. Makes warp travel seem realistic.

The kangaroo-fication of the courts The administration persecutes judges who follow the law and stuffs courts with ones willing to violate it.

New in PN: The kangaroo-fication of the courts

"While the administration happily rewarded Bove with a judgeship despite β€” or, more likely, because of β€” his willingness to give court orders the finger, Boasberg’s attempts to preserve the rule of law made him a target."

What’s a technology that you think is overhyped?

I’m going to give a sideways answer to this, which is that the venture capital business model needs to be understood as requiring hype. You can go back to the Netscape IPO, and that was the proof point that made venture capital the financial lifeblood of the tech industry.

Venture capital looks at valuations and growth, not necessarily at profit or revenue. So you don’t actually have to invest in technology that works, or that even makes a profit, you simply have to have a narrative that is compelling enough to float those valuations. So you see this repetitive and exhausting hype cycle as a feature in this industry. A couple of years ago, you would have been asking me about the metaverse, then last year, you would have asked me about Web3 and crypto, and for each of these inflection points there’s an Andreessen Horowitz manifesto.

It’s not simply that one piece of technology is overhyped, it’s that hype is a necessary ingredient of the current business ecosystem of the tech industry. We should examine how often the financial incentive for hype is rewarded without any real social returns, without any meaningful progress in technology, without these tools and services and worlds ever actually manifesting. That’s key to understanding the growing chasm between the narrative of techno-optimists and the reality of our tech-encumbered world.

Trump says Canada backing statehood for Palestine makes it β€˜very hard’ to negotiate U.S. trade deal U.S. President Donald Trump says Canada backing statehood for Palestine makes it β€œvery hard” for the United States to achieve a trade deal with its northern neighbour.

Did anyone think Trump was serious about an August 1 trade deal with Canada? He has relentlessly attacked our nation.
He hit us with harder tariffs than any other country.
He has continually threatened our sovereignty.
Canada needs to know this guy cannot be trusted.
