Look at this gross overreach by the Quebec government. Total interference into union affairs. The unions will have to respond to protect their organizations.

I really love Derek's posts for the impeccable taste of the sociology of fashion. But holy cow, I didn't know his critical take on labour history and labour politics as well. And I'm here for all of it. Great and important thread.

Alberta and the notwithstanding clause: Why the province just used it, and why it was logical to do so Don't knock the pre-emptive use of Section 33, knock the judges who made such use necessary

The conservative response to defending the Alberta government's preemptive usage of the notwithstanding clause--its the judges fault who keep making rulings we don't like.

Amazon just announced 14,000 layoffs. Its CEO made over $40M last year.

UPS announced 48,000 layoffs. Its CEO made over $24M last year.

Intel announced 20,000 layoffs. Its new CEO's pay package is valued at nearly $69M.

This is what I mean when I say the system is rigged.

And I would point out the ongoing paradox here: we respect the process by we will trample on the process because we didn't get the result we demanded. That isn't bargaining or respecting the process.

In introducing Bill 2 he is brutally honest. We negotiated, we didn't get the result we wanted, so we're ending this process and imposing a draconian agreement that has previously been democratically rejected by union membership.

"If McGowan and Common Front do push the red button, they’ll be making Canadian history. And we’ll have to wait and see if it would be crushed like the general strike in Winnipeg, or would force a government to change course, as Operation Solidarity was at least able to partly achieve in 1983."

Opinion: Alberta undermining public education β€” and democracy Any government that undermines ... the project of improving public school education in the face of difficulty is undermining ... democracy.

"And, in my estimation, the current gov is abandoning democracy. I don’t see any project by which they seek to strengthen the public. I see many projects by which they seek to fragment the public, pit some against others, marginalize local decision-making, and encourage fatalism and victimhood."
